So I've been thinking about getting a new computer.  I gotta convince my parents and I'm guessing they should allow about $500 for me to spend.  I've shopped around in newegg and came up with this.  Also, this is my first build so please be patient and my parents will probably need a lot of convincing.

^^I know the subtotal says $600, but I'm trying to decide between 4gb of DDR2800 or 3gb of DDR21066.

I'm looking to do some gaming like TF2, BF2, BF2142, and maybe some future games.  Will this be enough?

I'm coming from a pretty bad computer.

AMD Sempron 3400
MSI RS480M2
512 MB of DDR
160 GB hard drive
250W power supply.

I'd like some suggestions on maybe something that'll cut the price down a bit more.

Thanks.

I'm trying to decide between 3x1gb sticks of DDR2 800 or 2x2gb sticks of DDR2 1066.  It says that right below the pic.  Anyways, is it ok?

Kingston rams are bad choice.
Gigabyte DS3 -series are better than S3G.
SMG spinpoint F1's beat WD Caviar SE16's.
You want a better GPU.

Are you going for XP or vista?
Do you have a case that will fit the new computer? (ATX midtower)
Do you have other peripherals?
Will you overclock?

Here is my scratch/suggestion. Rebates bring it pretty near to $500:

I'd like a new case.  All the cases I have come from prebuilt computers so the airflow is horrible.
I'm going for XP, I can probably use this disk my dad has.
I have a 17" monitor, mouse and keyboard, speakers and a headset.
I don't think I'll overclock, just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I'll be back tomorrow.

For XP, go for 2GB, that'll be just fine. Prebuilt machine cases are not often usable on self-built machines, because they are often off-standard. You'll need a case too.

And for Overclocking, that E7200 just about screams for a little overclock. It would be shame not to put it to at least 3GHz. It's dead-easy and really safe too. I can help on that if needed.

Crap, I thought I added a case to it.  Anyways, I was thinking about this.

Something cheaper and with fans would be great.

Would be like that and then add some case from this list: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi … rder=PRICE

What looks nice to you, I'll check if it's decent. I have never believed in the superiority of well-branded cases, I have this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6811121037 And not a single problem so far.

Yeah 2 GB is fine for XP but if you do think you'll go to vista in the future it wouldn't hurt to get 4 now.  and most recent prebuilts i've seen do use standard motherboard standards but they are usually micro atx and will not fit a full sized board.

Ok, looked at your suggestions and now I have this list.

I want to cut something to get a better graphics card.  Any suggestions?

EDIT:  Are open box cases any good?  It comes without the cables that I probably will need.

EDIT 2:  Added these case fans.  They seem alright.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6835103022

Open boxes mean they were previously owned by someone else. Go with the retail one, not open boxed.

As for the rest of your stuff, I guess it's descent for what you wanna do.

My video card's open box from Newegg. Haven't had a problem with it. It saved me $80+ dollars.

Well, I replaced the video card with a 3850.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814102715 and the RAM to a higher speed.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820220161

Anybody know if the motherboard is good?
