I've been looking for a laptop to use on my way to and during uni. I want a convertible tablet one because touchscreens look useful and I'll be on a train alot so the tablet mode will be less awkward. Unfortunately, Australian retailers are a bunch of bastard coated ripoff artists. Harvey Norman tried to sell me an older version display model with much worse specs than this for $2000.

I've never used Ebay before though. He says he can get around the 10% tax for importing such an expensive object, which would make it around 1640AUD with shipping. But I dunno if he actually can or it that's such a good thing to try. With the tax it's 1800.

So I need some advice on buying from Ebay and laptops. Also, if anyone is familiar with AMD stuff, how good is the processor?

That's a quite decent price for a tablet PC.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

His feedback looks okay. He is right about import duty, in that someone else never read the auction and ended up leaving neutral feedback. Also, I wouldn't worry about his negative feedback because it seems that the buyer was the issue and not the seller.

However, I still wouldn't recommend buying that. It looks like you can buy it for much cheaper (and do upgrades as you will) from the HP store in the US - check it out (links seem to be ... special so I can't copy and paste). You can always use a service like Access USA ($30 off annual purchase with the code: SO-STS30) to get it shipped if you don't live in the US.

It looks better than the myus.com option because it's Australian, I don’t have to sign up for anything, it has a thread on whirlpool forums with pages of people saying how useful it is (here) and it ends up being approximately the same price.

Here's what I'm thinking of getting from the HP store:

But that's with the 2GHz processor, the 2.2GHz one is 1650AUD with tax. Is the 0.2GHz increase worth the extra $120?

I've heard about this one, it seems quite nice.

As for the processor upgrade... it depends. If you do some serious number crunching or something of the sort, I'm sure that you'd appreciate the time that might be shaved off from the slightly more powerful processor. But I'm somewhat certain that difference in frequency would be for the most part negligible for day-to-day use. If the upgrade was a bit cheaper, I'd say go for it, but at that price not worth it (for me at least). That is, unless you do do some heavy-duty stuff.
