Suicidal Inmates Granted Video Game Privileges in UK Prisons

If they hope to enjoy video games while incarcerated, British prisoners need to be very well behaved - or suicidal.

That's according to a report on ITN which details a new video game directive from the UK's Prison Service:

The document bans prisons from spending taxpayers' money on buying hardware or computer games for inmates with immediate effect.
Last year the Government admitted spending more than £10,000 on 80 PlayStations and 15 Xboxes for young offender institutions... Only inmates on the highest level of Incentives and Earned Privileges (IEP) and those at risk of suicide will be allowed to play computer games.

In granting gaming rights to inmates who are suicide risks, the Prison Service seems to be accepting the idea that video games are a stress reliever.

Prisoners who do earn gaming priveleges won't be playing GTA IV or Manhunt 2, however. R18 games will be banned from British prisons as of September.

What if someone just ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time? Should they have "lost their chance to have any rights"? I don't believe in your analogy at all ... some people do (despite what films critique) actually come out of prison and lead a healthy and productive life. Admittedly, some don't. "Let them kill themselves" because they are probably confused? What the hell.

What if someone just ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time? Should they have "lost their chance to have any rights"? i'll check the stats, but most ex-cons don't stay "ex" for very long

This is a young offenders prison so the stats will be different to that of a regular prison ... some guys just take a wrong turn. I'm not denying that people don't change ... I'm sure the rate of re-convictions is higher than what I expect it to be, but letting them kill themselves is an overstep. I couldn't even utter those words.

America's re-arrest rate is horrific, almost 70%

the UK's is 66%

so most do end up back where they started

I do agree there, but there have been accounts where video games sustained people during poor times ... trying to find some links but can't find any! (remember reading a few a year or two ago). But yes, counseling over luxury of course

Sure there are plenty of inmates who come out of prison and become functioning members of society. But for the time being, they're in prison, they committed a crime, they're there to be punished. We can't go soft on them and give them a free gym pass, cable tv, free meals, and videogames courtesy of the taxpayers. Heck, it sounds like a place I'd like to go, I should just commit a crime for no reason but to go to prison. Then once they kick me back out on the streets, I won't want to find a job or do anything useful with my life, but I sure would like to play some videogames, so I'll commit another crime and then pretend to be suicidal...

Last year CSS, Oblivion, BF2, CoD4 etc... Kinda were a life-line. Along with bf2s and R3v.

Prisons are supposed to be a mixture of punishment, rehabilitation and just plain locking them up so they can't cause trouble in the real world.
Not everyone gets life meaning life.
Not enough, if any, punishment in the UK these days.
