The press and the democrats have been insisting it's a loser from day one.
The losers appear to be the U.S. tax payer, as the Rackies still haven't paid for their own liberation.

When we start to go in the green (yea right).. then we can say that we paid for their liberation.ATG wrote:

It's a good thing the Chinese are still buying bonds. Of course in the long run that just means we are grabbing two ankles instead of one.

Seems like a back handed way of nationalizing large swaths of the mortgage economy, and I just hate the back handed shit of Bush.
I also don't understand why McCain is the nominee. They may as well as put up Lotta Drool.

http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jzxqARN0Huv38n5pgDfdBRwuoiZgD925HT7G0The United States is now winning the war that two years ago seemed lost.
Limited, sometimes sharp fighting and periodic terrorist bombings in Iraq are likely to continue, possibly for years. But the Iraqi government and the U.S. now are able to shift focus from mainly combat to mainly building the fragile beginnings of peace — a transition that many found almost unthinkable as recently as one year ago.
Despite the occasional bursts of violence, Iraq has reached the point where the insurgents, who once controlled whole cities, no longer have the clout to threaten the viability of the central government. [...]
This amounts to more than a lull in the violence. It reflects a fundamental shift in the outlook for the Sunni minority, which held power under Saddam Hussein. They launched the insurgency five years ago. They now are either sidelined or have switched sides to cooperate with the Americans in return for money and political support. [...]
Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, told the AP on Thursday that the insurgency as a whole has withered to the point where it is no longer a threat to Iraq's future. [...]
Shiite militias, notably the Mahdi Army of radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, have lost their power bases in Baghdad, Basra and other major cities. An important step was the routing of Shiite extremists in the Sadr City slums of eastern Baghdad this spring — now a quiet though not fully secure district.
Al-Sadr and top lieutenants are now in Iran. Still talking of a comeback, they are facing major obstacles, including a loss of support among a Shiite population weary of war and no longer as terrified of Sunni extremists as they were two years ago. [...]
Beyond that, there is something in the air in Iraq this summer.
In Baghdad, parks are filled every weekend with families playing and picnicking with their children. That was unthinkable only a year ago, when the first, barely visible signs of a turnaround emerged.
We won a long time ago didn't you see the mission accomplished sign ?
How is exactly does one win a war? Is it won when Iraq is as we see fit? Is it won when we have finally killed everybody that opposes our will? No, you don't win a war. You can only lose. Everybody loses. There is no way to win when it comes to war.

Good. Maybe that means we can GTFO soon.

I understand what you're trying to say philosophically, but practically, it holds no water.
One wins a war when one achieves one's objectives. Fairly straightforward. When one doesn't have clear objectives, that's when measuring winning or losing gets difficult.

When the other side agrees to stop fighting on your terms and does so, not when you have decided you've won and its time to invade somewhere else. How is exactly does one win a war?

Stopping the the problems that the invasion caused isn't a possitive accoplishment. If anything it's a apporach towards the end of an appauling disaster.lowing wrote:

It's nothing to do with why we went there. The insurgencey bagan due to piss poor post war management. That makes it our fault. It wasn't there before we got there. According to the Nuremburg tribunals everything that occurs at the result of an invasion is the fault of the invading country. It's all about that personal responsability thing.lowing wrote:
