ok, so my main PC has an 80 gig 10k sata as the primary, and a 160 gig 7200 sata as the secondary.

needless to say, i can barely have more than 3 games installed at once (vista is huge) and my data drive is quickly approaching full.  what are the best drives i can replace both with?  quality is very important, since i have no built-in fault tolerance.  help me spend my money

500 for a primary?  i kinda like the smaller size since seek time is pretty quick.  i was thinking no bigger than 250 for the primary, but even as low as 160...

Well, the new Velociraptors seem pretty good, if you've got the cash. Otherways, an SSD would be a cool thing to get, or, for a more normal suggestion, a Samsung Spinpoint F1.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I have had Seagate/Western Digital/Maxtor and currently have Western and Seagate in my comp and no issues... hard drives are pretty durable nowadays... They all have the possibilty of failing but that seems few and far between... I have seen a few people with raid setups that fail though... not all..some...   500gb drives are 90 bucks now...

640GB WD is faster then a raptor.

I'd go with a Samsung Spinpoint.  They are sexy.

No such thing, unless you mean the 76GB raptor?

Who mentioned a Raptor? It could just as well be a server drive.

No one mentioned a raptor, except for me. I didn't say his was a raptor, I simply stated there is no 80gb 10k drive. The closest thing is the 76gb raptor.

The bigger the drive the better the seek time (for comparable data volumes).
