I just got back from the computer store with my new 8800 gs. So I plug the sucker in (its huge ), plug in the dvi-to-vga cable, and turn the computer on.

All of a sudden, the card starts screaming at me (like the high-pitch, really loud ones) that shout, "What the crap are you doing! Turn me off!"

So I dont know why the card's freaking out, but Im running low on time, so I need help fast .

My Power supply is 380w, and the card recommends 400w, but 20w wont make much of a difference, right?

Thanx .

Wrong. It all depends on your PSU and what quality it is. Who make it?

Start unplugging other stuff (down to minimal bootable system), see if you can get it to POST.

Of course, you could just have a DOA card.

Hard and optical drives would be a better bet....

Also, with all the memory out it won't turn on.

I just took all (then half) the memory out, and apparently the computer turns on just fine.

The fans turn (even on the graphics card) too. Ill try the optical drive and hard drive next.

By turn on, I mean POST. It can't have done the POST with no memory, it's impossible - unless you have some sort of onboard RAM....

I just plugged in my old card, and my system now works perfectly

Tbh, the last thing I want to do is to upgrade my power supply for $100 (not counting the $130 graphics card I bought), so I give up. Im going to return it tomorrow. I think its my power supply, because the only thing that is affected is the card. Even though this means using my 8500 gt (crummy BFG ) there are more important things to use my money for (like...gas ) than boost my BF2 settings from medium to max.

Thanx

On Newegg you can get a good quality 500W PSu for $50.  That, and paying $130 for a used 8800GS?  The 88GTS are rapidly falling in price, beleive I saw one the other day at $140, so you'd be better off buying new at that price.

PSU is overloaded.

Really, like r2 said, spend smart on the card and you can use that extra money you saved to buy a quality PSU.

You did plug the power cable into the card right? If yes, then you need a new PSU.

Yep. When you told us what you did when you put the new card in your PC you didn't mention plugging the power cable into the GFX card.

My 8800GTS 512MB does that, means no (or not enough) power is going to the Card. It scared the hell out of me when I didnt plug it back in
