anyone else see this episode on the national geographic channel?

http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/s … 8/Overview

i was impressed, very good story and good suspense for a documentary.  i highly recommend seeing this if you get a chance.  the actual pilot recaps the story, the navy and marine officers who coordinated the rescue, and they even have the commander and an officer of the serb forces who were trying to capture him.  it really hit home when the marines came to save they guy, and he talked about how he felt when he saw the chinook coming in.

seems like the movie "behind enemy lines" is loosely based on this event (it had potential, owen wilson failed)

okay... I remember this when it happened, watching it on the news, and him making the talk show circuit afterwards.  Couple years later, I was stomping around Bosnia my own self.

Does that make me old?

Scott O'Grady was a numbnuts who got himself shot down by being stupid, then profited from his stupidity.

After he left active duty, he went to the Reserve unit at the base I was stationed at at the time. He didn't stay long, as the entire F-16 community (both active duty and reserves) disowned his incompetent ass.

His case is used as an example of what NOT to do, both prior to getting shot down and during the recovery op (ie, you don't stand up in the treeline and wave your gun in the air to get the heavily-armed PJ's attention).

Haha, funny to hear the other side of the story. I had only heard the "heroic survivor" side.

What exactly did he do wrong prior to getting shot down? (I don't really remember what happened)

I believe that was the birth of USMC T.R.A.P. , at least in a combat situation as far as I know.

I like how they sort of downplayed how the rescuers disarmed him by force, like that's routine.
