If it's a normal SATA or ATA HD, there should be no problems. I would recommend you getting a SATA one, if it's an ATA drive you have, though.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

The only thing I'm worried about, though, is him just using the hdd and connecting it up with what he's got on it currently (OS and lots of files). My point is that he should really reformat and reinstall the OS to prevent complications.

"Should really"? That's more like a "have to". Always reformat any system drive before sticking it into a new computer, or all kinds of crazy ass shit could happen.

When I did mine all I had to do was repair the operating system, and then it allowed me to log on just for re-registering the product. All of my data and programs were kept. Just make sure you have the disk and the product key (XP).

No, the issue is the Windows on that drive has the HAL configured to work with your old system. You will simply bluescreen.

A repair install rebuilds the HAL (and I recommend a repair install whenever possible), but I would still do a fresh install for a long term install, and also because you have a blank slate

i guess... i suppose it could just start afresh on this new OS i'm getting given (unless i find my OS disks), and then hook up my current HD and transfer media across.

i only really give a shit about the media, one day of sitting on the tubes will have all my other stuff back
