Anyone have any tips for learning Finnish on my own?

Only person I know that can speak it is my mother and my cousins but they're in Finland so kind of inaccessible, but I don't live at home anymore also.

I learned Chinese in private lessons and by spending time in China but I had to for work. I don't really want to spend much money on Finnish since it's just a personal goal.

I know there's books / programs I can get. But I just mean some tips from native speakers. Would you say it's easy or difficult?

How did you think Chinese was?  Easy or hard?  I heard Chinese was easy for an English speaking person because the language was "logical" and "made sense".  What did you think of it?  I hear Finnish is one of the hardest languages to learn.  Good luck with it.

I've been trying to learn Cantonese for a while now and can tell you that while it is logical, it's hard as shit. I've studied Latin, Spanish and German and this is by far the hardest.

Hmm... Those won't help much. But the German part will help a tad. If you have basic skills on Finnish, try start reading an internet magazine of your interest. A sports page for example? It's always easier to learn if you are reading something that interests you. Have a dictionary next to you too. www.sanakirja.org is a webpage I use all the time if I can't remember or don't know something in English.

edit. That webpage won't probably won't do much good if you don't handle the basics but in the upper corner you can choose from fi-eng and eng-fi. Just write the finnish word and press HAE (search).

Finnish is supposed to be really hard because it doesn't have anything based off latin in it.

walking around biaritz and asking for the house red in french is equally nice.

Finnish is one of the hardest languages on the world to learn, read it somewhere. Good luck.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I rather enjoy different languages. Always fun to go out with my Aussie friends and learn new English that I never heard in the States. My German is rather good, too.

English is boring because almost everyone knows it.  And you can't speak privately about stuff anywhere in public because everyone knows your language.
