These last couple days I was cruising around on my friend's boat with him and a couple of amigos and we had a pretty interesting experience the first night..

Last year we did the same boat trip but because of the weather we severely fucked up the boat because we drove it into waves that the engine/boat couldn't handle despite it being quite big. The engine ended up having to be replaced and we were only able to put the boat out on the water a couple days back....

..about 6 hours after we put the boat on the water the goddam motor died in the middle of the ocean.

The beginning of the trip was great with good weather and fucking awesome water conditions. After a couple of hours of driving, however, the fucking weather decided to take a turn for the worse and all around us lightning, wind and rain emerged..anyone who lives in Oslo will vouch for the awesome display of lightning that occurred on Wednesday night...awesome but fucking dangerous in the middle of the ocean.

So our motor died at around 12:30 am with no boats around, in the dark and waves that were pretty damn dangerous..we had no way of getting into shore so we ended up having to send out a 'mayday' call and have the coast guard come and tow us out of a situation that could potentially fuck everyone up in the boat..

The coast guard had problems finding us and in the end we were saved after an hour of waiting and then got towed to the nearest docking area.

We got one of the crew to check our engine and it turned out the reason why it had died was because the bloody mechanic forgot to tighten 4 bolts connecting the propeller to the inside of the boat...the propeller ended up slipping back and getting stuck in the rudder which explained why we couldn't move left/right or get the boat moving..

Fuck people who don't do their jobs properly..now we're going to get a big fat bill from the Norwegian coast guard for sending out a mayday call in the middle of the night to come save our helpless asses.

You have to pay to get your life saved? I think I'd rather sit there and die frankly...

Also I got a science question. If lightning hit the sea does it travel and how far? Ie you're swimming 2 miles away from where it strikes would you die?

Yeah..hopefully we can get the insurance company to pick up the bill because the whole situation arose because of a faulty engine...

Ers..that's what I wanted to do

I'm sure it'll end up at around 2000kr which is the equivalent of about 200 pounds

lightings do not hit the sea.and if they do,the current does not travel a very long way

they do, but you're safe about a football field away in every direction.

In freshwater, it obviously travels further... I remember watching a video on it, works out to about 0.48A/m²

Sue the mechanic. Literally sue him. Massive negligence on his part that could have cost you your lives.

Actually the ions in a salt solution - which sea water is - are what makes water a good conductor.

QFT, this guy knows his science. An on the current traveling in watery solutions subject, if you fry a dude in an electric chair pour some piss on him for the extra kick, he'll love it .
