A couple years ago at college my Muslim Media Studies lecturer, who was obsessed with this shit, always maintained that al-Zawahiri was really Al Qaeda's commander and that Bin Lid was merely a 'popular' figurehead amongst extremists.

And no, said lecturer didn't try to behead me.
