The ones I use with the local SWAT team (I work with the Local PD, and go on training with SWAT) have .357 blanks in them (3-6). The flash isn't the bad part, it's the bang. You lose your balance, and get all disoriented, which lasts for up to about 2 minutes. Your vision is only affected for a few seconds, and for me it was black. But you can't really walk for about a minute. Oh and whatever was in your hands at the time of detonation magically lands across the room.
Yes I have been flash banged.
Yes I have been flash banged.
never used one or trained with them. we never worried about taking them alive.

I remember a documentary where an SAS bloke was going through all their different gear and so on, he was saying that the flashbang is much like having a jet engine next to your ear when it goes off, sound wise. Was it like that?Major.League.Infidel wrote:

I remembered in the movie Diehard there was a disc shaped flashbang that looked like a hockey puck.
Are those even real?
Are those even real?
They come in all different shapes and sizes... the flashbangs I mean...
I haven't experienced a real flashbang. However, in school, our teacher blew apart a 1L bottle by pouring in liquid nitrogen. We expected the cap to fly off, rather than the whole thing to explode. The bang deafened the entire class for a good 5-10seconds...and it sounded exactly like the Rainbow Six sound effect. "POP"-->(ears ringing).
I think everything that kills your hearing - even temporarily - will sound alike. But do not want to find out! OoRAIMIUS wrote:

That ringing sound is the effect of having all the little hairs in your ear (specifically the cochlea) pushed flat, and stuck there by the force of the wave of sound into the water. Because the sensors in the inner part are constantly on, a high-pitched ringing will be heard.Mavik wrote:

In that respect, yes, any sound loud enough to make your ears ring will mean hearing damage, but low, loud, extended noises (as well as high ones) will degrade your hearing just as much.
