Do not be scared of the wall of text

K so this is the deal.

Was playing bf2, chilling, PC froze up (has never done this before) and I got a high pitched noise coming from the speakers (not the pc). So I rebooted, when windows loads up, with the little bar thingy, it freezes up and goes no further, ive given it time 20 mins or so and nothing.

What I've done:  Safe mode system restore to yesterday.
Safe mode with command prompt and done a chkdsk
Safe mode again and done a system restore to last week
Safe mode with networking gets stuck on loading windows files
Checked BIOS for system temps, system is running at 25 degrees and CPU is running at 30

TBH, Im a tad lost, only things I download are videos from filefront. Sites I visit are generally facebook, ebay, apple and bf2s.
I've had a mate round for a the last couple of nights, and he's been on the pc once while i was asleep, I know in the past he's visited all kinds of dodgy shit on my pc, ogrish.com and all that so there's a possibility he may have one to a dodgy site but I don't know.

I don't hav any AV or anti spyware stuff aside from windows firewall.

Generally speaking, I REALLY want to avoid a reformat.

Any ideas?

Sys specs: 2 GB DDR2 corsair 6400 (I think)
Core 2 due E6750, not overclocked
                8800GTS 640mb
                320GB samsung HDD
                650 PSU
Abit Fatal1ty mobo, can't remember what one, if needed can find out.
                And various other peripherals

Edit: Maybe one of the most important bits of info.... Running windows vista home premium 32 bit SP1

Panic at the desktop!  lmao.

try:

check all connectors
re-seat all cards / memory
try booting with only 1 stick of mem.

To figure out whether the problem is in you hard drive/OS installation, you should try putting your hard drive in another computer.  If it boots up fine, then you won't have to reformat, but if it's fucked even in a different computer, you may not have a choice.

Take out all the ram sticks except for one, and try booting.

Well, as much as I'd like to watch you fellas scratch your heads over this one for a few days, I fixed the problem, seems GPU's don't take kindly to mammoth size dust balls in their fans (who knew?), although I did swap over my SATA cable while i was there.

I was convinced it was an software problem and not hardware, I should have known from the 15fps i was getting in bf2 yesterday. Anyways, thanks for all the suggestions, karma loving coming your way.
