The claim is probably whats under the ice/water.. the sea floor.
Those are international waters, therefore the seabed falls into international law.
Keyword being claim. People try to claim stuff all the time. I was just saying I doubt that they were saying this ice is ours. The more likely motive would be the natural resources under it.

Same goes for space, or the moon/Mars. Who really has the rights? And like people that sell stars. What the fuck? Who gives them the right?

Of course, I understand where you're coming from, however if there's no land, there can be no claim.

This is all for oil isn't it? Oil is the worst thing that has happened to the world. The worst things are always the best things. Oil is like a drug, easy to get addicted to, and you think its the best, but really its killing you, and you always take more and more each time.

Untrue. People buy and sell lakes, rivers, and even the air above their land. It happens all the time in cities. Remember you are talking to someone who has a little bit of knowledge in this area . Littoral rights, Riparian rights, Subsurface rights are all considered real property.

I'm talking about a sea, those are international waters.  Nobody claims the middle of the Atlantic.

I'm not disagreeing with you as far as that location. I was just telling you that those things can in fact be claimed with reasonable precedent.

They may simply be arguing about exploitation rights for that area.  I know such rights have been given in other parts of the world already.

A country can claim whatever it wants.  In the end, it's peer response (other nation-states recognizing/denying the claim) or war that will decide.
