A Thai teenager incensed that he could not afford to play the violent computer game Grand Theft Auto has robbed and stabbed dead a taxi driver.

The 18-year-old high school student, whose name was withheld, was arrested on Sunday after police found the bloody body of a 50-year-old Bangkok taxi driver slumped in his car.

"He confessed that he committed the crime because he had copied it from the game he played," said Bangkok police Captain Veerarit Pipatanasak.

The teenager was charged with robbery and possession of a weapon, and could face the death penalty or life imprisonment if convicted, Veerarit said.

"He wanted money to play the game. His parents, who work as civil servants, did not have enough money to give him," he added.

Instead, the teenager spent his 500 baht ($A16) allowance on two knives.

The Grand Theft Auto computer game series, which has sold about 70 million copies, has come under fire for its graphic depiction of casual violence, drug dealing and prostitution.

The fact that a minor can buy two knives for $16 seems more of an issue.

Why do people make a big fuss over the game tbh, any person with any sense would realise that it is just a video game..

Bad parents, worthless lawyers and I hate to do it but I give the kid credit for trying to exploit it. However, it doesn't work, but it's fun to watch.

Lol. Here we go, anxious parents wanting to blame toys and games instead of their own skills.

After playing hours upon hours of GTA4 and then getting stopped by a cop for passing a stopped school bus, my first thought was to kill the cop when he got to my window. Too bad I pussied out and gave him my license and registration. But at that point, I got a small glimse of how people saying video games leads to violence COULD have a least a little merit. Because I'm a very non-violent person.

Yeah same, I'm always looking out for high vantage points to get to so I can take a rifle up and fire at people.

It is so easy to blame the game, when the real deeds to kill are in that guy's head. No one decides to kill someone just because a game shows it. If he won't copy it from the game, he will copy it from some movie, daily news, or his own twisted mind.

But ignore me, too complicated.

Just blame the game.

You know what though, GTA is the ONLY game I can almost see that arguement with... Because A LOT of people I talked with have echoed that sentiment...

After playing way too much GTA I think there are quite a few people who start to see what they could do in GTA in real life situations...
But still, sane people just ignore that the way you, I, and all other normal gamers do.

Its like autocross (for those who don't know its amateur racing through a course made up of cones)
Sure every time I drive past a construction site my first instinct is to want to slalom through the road cones... But I know how illegal that is so I don't.
