Will 2 4870s make my PSU asplode?

I have a Thermaltake Toughpower PSU which is currently powering my main rig:

E8400
Asus Commando
Sapphire HD4870
2GB RAM
6 HDDs

I'm soon going to add another HDD (or two) and I'm wondering: if I bought a second HD4870 to run in crossfire, will my PSU be up to handling the 8 HDD dual core crossfire rapage or will it asplode, requiring me to get a new PSU? If so, can anyone recommend a good PSU that will be up to it?

I used to run an OCed q6600, P5N32-e SLI, OCed and V modded 8800GT SLI'ed, 4x1GB DDR2, 9HDs, 2 DVD, loads of fans and lights off a 700W toughpower without breaking a sweat. I think you should be all right

It's a bit on the low side, but it should be ok.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

It's running 72 amps guys. Same as my 600W OCZ StealthXStream.

I always look at amps over wattage...72 might be cutting it a bit short. I'm not sure. 8 HDDs? Jesus, that's a lot. I only have 3 so I don't really know the power they consume. Anything overclocked?

Nothing overclocked.

If I did go and put the HDDs/4870 in and the Tt couldn't handle it, wouldn't would just turn off, or would it cause damage to the PSU/componants?

I think it would cause BSODs randomly...

It would freeze, BSOD, be laggy, blow up violently and fry everything (unlikely, yet possible), etc.

But, you will be fine. If you are really worried, get the Toughpower 750W.

It may not even power up with the added power draw at startup from another vid card and HDD's. Then again it may have no problems at all.

I would recommend if you try it with that PSU that you save up and look into a little more juice as it is cutting it close and could eventually fry even if it does work to begin with.

Also keep in mind that every PSU is less effective and wears down a lot quicker when under heavy, near 100% load.

Well, seems as though the consensus is to get a new PSU too be on the safe side. I was actually thinking that if I needed to get a new PSU, I'd get a good one and then buy a 4870X2 for tri-fire. Can anyone recommend a good PSU that could handle that?

OCZ is legit (that's the 700W version of mine, I love it), PC Power and Supply is also very good. And Toughpower of course is a solid series.

Personally i would recomend either the Thermaltake Toughpower 750W ([$209 from PLE or Austin) or the Corsair TX-750 ($190 from PLE).

I would lean towards the Toughpower due to it's modular cabling system, which the corsair lacks (seems strange to me that the 750 doesn't have it yet my 620 does?!?!). Supposedly the Toughpower is also 5% more efficient then the corsair.

However the Toughpower only comes with 6 SATA cables (as does the OCZ haffey recommended) as opposed to the 8 in the Corsair. You could use molex to SATA converters but they can look ugly. The Toughpower 850W comes with 8 but then the price jumps to $259 at PLE (You may even want the exra power).

I'm sure you'll look into it more closely, but hopefully this helps.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll probably go with the toughpower 850W, as I'm going to need those 8 SATA and 4 PCIEx16 power plugs. I'll need to save up a bit more but I think the end system will be worth it.

That's because your 620 is a different series of corsair than the 750 (and made by a different OEM). They do make a 1000watt modular corsair but nothing between the 620 and 1000.

Modular isn't anything real special though. I have a Modular Antec, and it's a bit of a pain. Takes up more room than just a single strand coming out of one hole.

I realise they're from different series, i just find it strange that they wouldn't go modular.

But then as CrazeD points out, not everyone really wants modular.
