Before we start laughing at the Georgians, Id love to know exactly what part of the provocations the Russians listed is "true". While it is possible that the peacekeepers may have been hit by Georgian artillery by accident. It looks though that the 4 aircraft shot down were trying to attack the Georgians and/or support the South Ossetia's (is that what they are called?). Unless it has been stated that Russian aircraft are supposed to patrol the skies over South Ossetia and/or other parts of Georgia, I don't see how they could have been shot down. Also, even if they were allowed to do those things previously mentioned, I can understand the reasoning behind shooting down those planes, I don't like it, but I understand it. If your enemy's allies war planes are overflying you, I wouldn't feel safe as long as they are up there. Remember though, that is assuming the Russians were allowed to do overflights, it is entirely possible that they weren't and the shoot downs were ok from the legal standpoint.

Yeah, me too, probably because it doesnt involve Iran, that said. This is rather odd, they seem to be calling for peace, but working in the opposite direction. Also the call for US intervention worrys me(least it seems the Georgians are calling for intervention). Not to mention that the Russians are playing this off as a Georgian attack. I dont like this.
The US will probably offer mediation and talks. I can't see them going to war with Russia over this. Some guy in the Pentagon will have run this scenario and whilst the Georgians say it's in the US's interest to help, I don't think it is. It might improve the international image because they'd be sticking up for essentially the little bullied kid against a proper military. That's not worth WW3.
Those were Georgians, it had been said also that the attacks on the Georgian airfield were done by Su24s.M.O.A.B wrote:

Whoops. My point still stands, though not as high. It is possible to get leading elements there that quick. If the Georgians actually did provoke this, then they deserve what ever they got coming. Feel sorry for the common folk though.
on a side note, i really am interested in the weapons that are being deployed on both sides... has anyone seen technical references to the tanks or aircraft being used? i just want an idea of how badly the georgian army is going to get kicked.
Ah, always find it hard to tell Russian troops apart from most Eastern Euro countries, seeing as they seem to use the bulk of similar stuff.Commie Killer wrote:

this one also states russia was merely retaliating to a georgian offensive. looks like they just had a force of about 600 soldiers trained by the us marines, and then used them to attack ossetia. even though they are US allies, this is the second story i've seen stating georgia started it. btu of course, since the US trained these guys, it might be our fault
and of course if russia was doing overflights, georgia is going to try to shoot them down regardless if they were on attack patterns or not. but i doubt russia would send an attack mission right into an AA trap. im sure they were just doing overflights, and got attacked by surprise by georgian mobile AA. but im purely speculating, i have no evidence to back that up.

Some nations got the luck of Russian laziness and military surplus. Others follow STANAG and got vietnam-era M16s.Commie Killer wrote:

Makes sense to get Russian technology, they border Russia...
Plus it's cheaper than what the West use, and it's a small country in every sense of the word.

Yeah, the wiki article on the Georgian armed forces put their total men in active service at like 38,000.jord wrote:

lulz a friend of mine was there a few weeks ago training some of them
I have no idea what Russia's motive is for this, they'll be steamrolled though. Neither the NATO, EU or US can do anything about this, I don't think Russia will be stopped without considerable effort / deals which most likely won't be made.
Putin is a smart son of a bitch, no idea what he's up to but there's something he wants else he won't be doing this. (I still see him as the man who's pulling the ropes, he's got more influence than anyone.)
I don't like this one bit though.
Last thing we need is a dispute with Russia or stuff may get REAL ugly.

I'll tell you what their motive is: power. US helps Kosovo get independent therefore 1:0 US but if Russia makes independence of Ossetia happen, it would be 1:1. Giants showing off their muscles.dayarath wrote:

That looks serious. But what does give Russia the right to enter Georgian soil. They did enter Georgian soil right?
Although I'm for the Georgians, the right is that the soil isn't Georgian by the Russians view..Sup wrote:

Seeing as how mostly Russians live in that region.
As far as I know Stalin divided Ossetia on two parts. One was Russian and the other was Georgian. Correct me if I'm wrong.jord wrote:

Besides, interesting is that Abkhazia has entered the war too, that could open a second front.
They have Russian passports. I'm in no way defending what Russia is doing though, just trying to understand.BALTINS wrote:

It seems, from what I've taken from the news, that a lot of those in SO want to stay more in touch with Russia than Georgia.
