The European powers were paper tigers in comparison to the US in recent years, China has only truly begun to awaken in recent years and many had thought Russia were a spent force and hence we had a global situation were the US were able to do almost as they pleased. Obviously the US would never have been able to attack the likes of France, Germany, Russia or China but there was a time when the US would have to tread a little more carefully in foreign policy terms (like Iraq for example) because there was always the threat of a Russian counter measure.jord wrote:

i am going to root for Russia on this. I prefer their malevolent ways, at least their honest about it and don't fanny about under the freedom banner.
Blackbelts are just whitebelts who have never quit.
The issue is at hand of what will the United States do? Will they help thier allies in the east and show the world that our treaties are more than words? Will they back down and ignore Gerogia and take flak from thier current allies and push away new ones? Will they try to end this peacefully for a combination of both?
The pawns have been set into place. It is time for the United States to make a choice on the matter and show the world what it is willing to do to help its allies.

When you become Minister for foreign affairs we might start applauding the US for it's upfront, no pretense approach.usmarine wrote:

Hard to blame the Russians here.

The US will probably offer mediation and talks. I can't see them going to war with Russia over this. Some guy in the Pentagon will have run this scenario and whilst the Georgians say it's in the US's interest to help, I don't think it is. It might improve the international image because they'd be sticking up for essentially the little bullied kid against a proper military. That's not worth WW3.
Screw it, I'm in!usmarine wrote:

Time to recycle the EU and make it do what was supposed to be done?jord wrote:
The fact is soon Russia and China are going to be stronger than Britain and America if they're not already. As I've said I doubt the US is going to lose Billions if not Trillions fighting against Russia in money as well as thousands of soldiers lives.
Georgia, I'm sorry to say isn't worth it.
Besides, don't count out the other EU nations, frenchies, germans etc.
inane little opines
Why, the the rest of the EU is barely capable of anything military against Russia. The EU fails when the more powerful nations do something.dayarath wrote:

French and Germany and even Britain would hardly stand a chance. And if we did we'd all be ruined financially for 100 years.
Thats the point. They WON'T help Georgia.BALTINS wrote:
But where is the point on provoking Russia without having no one backing them, how can they be sure the US, NATO whatever will help them..
Georgia started it anyway, and you just can't have someone else fight your battles for you anyway. This is a stupid reason for US/Europe to go to war with Russia for.
As far as I see this, if South Ossetia wants to be an independent nation (that includes not being part of Russia), let them have their independence.
If they want to be part of Russia, then fuck that, then the Ossetians there should move to Russia. But I guess, what ever happens now, SO isn't going to be Georgian territory anymore, in the worst case even Georgia won't be.

I wouldn't say that exactly. The Ossetians see themselves as a distinct people and the Georgians have been smart enough to grant them de facto independence in this regard. The Russians on the other hand are still bitter that they lost the Georgian region never mind the Ossetian region and have been giving out Russian passports like sweeties to anyone in Ossetia who will take them, this then gives the Russians the pretense of 'protecting their citizens' in times of anything resembling a conflict. The whole situation has been very much engineered.topthrill05 wrote:

I think you overestimate Russia's military a little. Russia has a large force yes, but it is still deprived in the sense of a superpower military. Their equipment is generally older and they don't have enough of their new tech to cover everything. Their military is not expected to return to something like their Cold War days until about 2020.Braddock wrote:

And furthermore, I think you may have to put that missile shield system on hold for a while!
BF: Bad Company tbh
I think you underestimate it. The bandwagon of "Yeah Russia/China have millions of soldiers but they're shit, their weapons are shit and their equipment is shit" is long gone. They still have enough military and political clout to go to war with small countries like Georgia and not be called on it. Plus they got nukes.M.O.A.B wrote:

The Russian army is still relying on their older generation T-72's and T-80's, they don't have vast stocks of the newer upgraded T-90 tanks. Their main rifle is still the AK-74, and only small numbers have been given the newer AK-100 series weapons. Nukes I don't see come into this, they weren't going to use them for the 50-60 years when everyone was pointing them at everything. Russia does have well trained soldiers and some decent equipment, but this idea that Russia could steamroller the entire European continent is rather ludicrous.jord wrote:

I'm not talking Nazi Germany steam rolls, I'm talking a long time win. They would drag it out enough for them to mass produce newer weapons and then they'd take over mainland Europe within 10 years. That's my guess anyway.M.O.A.B wrote:
