i have something similar near me (in the same town as me) at Brookhaven National Laboratory...and I think it's actually LONGER than the LHC.

And people had the SAME fear that people have about the LHC. And the RHIC has been running since 2000.

Length itself is not important, what is important is how much energy can be transferred to a particle, which usually requires a longer track.
