That's exactly what I was saying...not everyone needs it, but many do.

Also, I need to move a double bass/bass guitar + amp across town 3-7 days a week, not much fun to do on foot or on a bike

Edit...Oh Jeez...my point was I'm not as lazy as you seem to think. Walking 8 miles would take a couple of hours and a couple of hours back...so your walking alternative doesn't hold up.

I'm done here, have fun in dreamland

I didn't say it was, I meant people need the car to work if they do something that doesn't involve sitting in an office all day, but I see you've missed the point and conveniently ignored everything else I said.

I was jus makin the point that a phone is almost as necessary as a car. That we dont HAVE to use a mobile, in the same way we dont HAVE to use a car. But if we want anything more than absolute basic living, we do need them.
My life was in that phone. I'm not upset cos of the moentary value, its what I needed it for.
That was the only contact number the guys at work have for me, so no phone means no work, which means no money (necessary)
I had the numbers of about 100 friends and family, so without that its hard to contact them
I'm meant to be going out 2moro evening, but tryin too contact people and them contact me is almost impossible
There was a fairly significant girl development on friday evenin, now I cant even talk to her

Agreed, that's basically the argument I was making with Jord...we don't need cars/phones etc to survive, but to make enough cash to have a decent standard of living in the west they're pretty important

Is that BMX talk?  I don't understand what it is.  If it was nice and expensive, then I feel sorry for you.  Actually, I would still feel sorry for you even if it's not a nice bike.    Sorry dude.

Debatable tbh, yes they make things a hell of alot easier, but 10/20 years ago noone had mobiles...it's just hard to imagine life without them now

(I realise I have contradicted myself in the last couple of posts, ohwell...I guess I'm saying mobiles have only become a 'necessity' very recently).

That's not debatable at all. I need my cell phone when I'm on call, and that's definitely not a "total luxury". That's a definite necessity.

10-20 years ago was 10-20 years ago. The world changes, and communication needs change along with it. By the same standard, you could stay that using trucks to transport cargo is a luxury, because people used to carry it by horse and carriage.

Like I said before, the only necessity's are what we need to live.

But I won't go into it, at risk of being called a caveman again.

That's ridiculous. Necessities are always relative to your situation. For most people, working is a necessity, and the tools of their trade are necessities by relation. There comes a point where abstraction is excessive enough to detach from reality any opinion derived from it.

I gotta agree with that I'm afraid. You would live without your mobile phone I'm sure of it. You could get a new job or just receive welfare.

Shit life I know, but that's the point. Earning a lot of money to buy your computer and whatever isn't really necessary.

You're defining a necessity of -life-, not a necessity relevant to your situation -in- life. Again, necessities are always defined in relation to a situation or a concept, and life is just one of them. To even begin to claim that the only necessities in any situation are the necessities of life shows a misunderstanding of what the word means, and how to apply it.
