29 March 2003[/url]

Putin did not question the goals of the war, nor did he counter the false and contrived arguments given out by the Bush administration and the US media as grounds for this bloody adventure. He merely called for national sovereignty to be respected and international law to be observed, and said that only the UN Security Council could reach a decision about Iraq.
We should all be grateful that Georgia was not a member of Nato, because if they were we would have been contractually bound to go to war with Russia. The timing and savagery of the Russian assault is meant to send a message to the U.S. and Nato; turn about is fair play, and stay the hell out of our backyard.

tbh, I really think we should stay out of this.  South Ossetia is allied with Russia. There is a majority of ethnic Russians.
The U.S. plunged ahead with our Iraq invasion despite Russian demands, and as far as I can tell there were few ethnic Americans in Iraq, and few legitimate reasons for us to invade. Of course, the big reason we did it is because  U.N. resolutions are meaningless without a military enforcement option.

The U.S. under Bush has been flexing it's muscle. This is Russia doing the same thing, and we should stfu.

This is a powder keg. Not worth world war, which it could turn into. Neocons are calling for a aircap over Georgia.
That would put U.S. F22 jets into combat with Russian pilots and tankers.

Bush warns Russia to pull back in Georgia.

All it's taken for the previous world wars has been a little spark.

He said "could" and if it forces the US and Russia into a conflict it would quickly escalate into proxy wars.

Do you know how WW1 started? With a single assassination. Old alliances were then enacted and the major powers found themselves on opposing fronts. Both Germany and Britain had been preparing for war for the years leading up to 1914, but it was the murder Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria that set it off.

World war for the British in 1914 started over Belguim, and in 1939 over Poland.

It's not inconceivable.

those pipeline countries aren't worth the fight.  They're all basically worthless.

The only part that annoys me is the fact that Russia is still pissy over losing the cold war.  They're still focused on their little sphere of influence.  They need to wipe the tears and spunk off their face and be glad they have oil and gas.  If they didn't, they'd be a god damned 3rd world country.

Putin is a Genocidal dictator in the making.  This guy needs a bullet in his head.  What the fuck was Yeltsin thinking?

It's Russia....  Corruption and oppression are practically genetic for them.

No need to fight for them, but it needs to be shown that this isnt ok, or other countries may get the same idea.

I know what you mean.  I try to avoid that sort of thing most of the time as well, but if you ever read through a history of Russia, it's so fucking depressing.  It would seem that it has never been a very pleasant place to live.

Yup, i know about that, i would not want to live in russia for nothing. I like chernobyl tho. The feeling of the place is awesome, i definatly want to go there once in my life, even tho it involve entering Russia. Lets hope i dont get kidnapped or something.

Edit: Disregard the fact that i tho Chernobyl was part of Russia, but i still wanna go there

So the Russian contributions to classical music and literature should be ignored eh?

Apparently Chaykovsky and Bulgakov mean shit nowadays.. Generalization is a problem (ref: "All muslims are terrorists"), and usually full of exaggeration and false accusations.

It's scary to see how people would "like to see "NATO vs. Russia". Obviously these people have a false image of war. FYI, people die. Scares the shit out of me tbh. If the worst case scenario manifestates and we get an eventual WWIII, I just hope it will a) not resort to nukes, b) be swift as all parties understand the ludicrous situation they have putten themselves into, and c) that I personally won't have to take to arms.

As for the sceptics, WWI started with a single mans actions and WWII with Germany invading Poland. When nations have many allies, everything can escalate to a global situation. Then again, because of said alliances, the situations often cool off (which is what usually happens and why alliances exist).

Is the Cold War still on?

It's not inconceivable.
WWI was the result of 50 years of militarization in Europe. It was inevitable that something like WWI would happen in such a situation. WWII, too, was inevitable while Stalin and Hitler were around - they weren't going to lie down and play nice.

As if there hasn't been 50 years of militarization in Russia and the United States?
