Okay, so a friend of mine is selling her laptop, and the customer needs it to run in French. It's got XP Home ed. SP1, and it's a Dell Inspiron 6100. I have a clean copy of XP's factory install disc. I know I have to reinstall XP, but what from there? Is this even possible?
Thanks.

I think when you reinstall there's a "regional" setting that you can change to France. It'll show up when you reinstall.

Yeah, you can do that from the control panel, which I've tried; no result. Thanks though.

Oh man I can't find it. I have Slovenian language pack but I can't find the French one. Dunno if its still available but it was available before. Its called Service Pack Release Notes for Windows Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Version. Try to find it on the web.

Ummm...

Control Panel -> Date, Time, Language and Regional Options -> Regional and Language Options -> French?

Tried, no worky. Just changes your computer's keyboard layout, not the OS UI.

For me that only changes my keyboard layout, date and time.

Yeah, same. Apparently I need a MUI, which I cannot buy from retail, as Microfuck wants you to buy a "enterprise-sized complement" of these bastards.

In vista I always see the language packs that you can download and install as 'optional updates'

I dunno if you can do the same through XP but try to look through windows update?

I believe that to be the only legal way to obtain it.

I did. Indeed it seems that Vista has it, and so does XP Embedded, but nothing for Home.

Put in your original OS cd and then choose install additional support\packages. You should have the option to install additional languages without having to reinstall the whole OS.
