I'm trying to set up a network connection between my PC and a laptop that's connected to it wirelessly.  The computer has vista and the laptop has XP.  On the computer, I can see the laptop's "Shared Folder" and everything, but I can't find anything about the computer from my laptop's 'network places' file.

How do I go about sharing files so that I can watch movies that are stored on my PC through my laptop?

First up, try connecting the laptop up to your router using an ethernet cable (assuming it has an ethernet port) - do you see the desktop PC from the laptop now?

If so, your router probably has 'wireless isolation' enabled - now, here's the rub - wireless isolation is a good thing - it's stops anyone with a wireless device from accessing your LAN, but you may be able to disable it on a device-by-device basis.

What router do you have?

I'll grab a cable in a second here, but I have a Linksys WRT54G

Do you have the manual for your router handy?

I can't see a 'wireless isolation' setting (yet), but I have spotted a number of things which may need looking at - if I could point you to the right page in the manual, that would be good...

I don't have that manual handy at the moment... but the PDF opens just fine, and even with the cable connected, I can't see anything

Ah... then it's probably not an issue with the router...

Do you have printer and file sharing enabled on both the desktop and laptop?

yeah

But on the computer (with Vista) in the network and sharing center, it says the public sharing folder is on, but a password is required... I don't know if that matters at all, and printer sharing isn't enabled because I don't have a printer connected right now

OK, leave the laptop connected to the router via the etnernet cable for now...

Then, make sure your workgroup (right click My Computer->Properties->Computer Name tab) is the same on both machines.

Now, try again. Does that work?

hmm... :scratches head:

I've heard getting vista and xp to talk can be tricky - not something I've done though, so I'm not sure what else to suggest...

Actually, didn't someone else having same/similar issues post a thread here a while back?

Here's what I'm seeing on the PC.. I don't know why the laptop is on the "discovered but not placed on the map" list

I was trying to set up a file-sharing network between an XP machine and a Vista machine for about a month.  It never happened... I had a similar problem, one machine saw the other but not vice versa.  Good luck

Okay, so now I can go through the 'work group' thing on the laptop but I have to turn off password protection of vista because I forgot the password.. Is there anyway you can reset network passwords?

The password to connect to a shared drive is the username and password of a user on machine you are connecting to.
