Get an 8600GT.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

My friend has a 9600GT in his HP, it fits fine.
If your gonna start upgrading the processor your almost spending enough just to start over.

If you get anything in the 8-series other than an 8800, register it for the warranty, you will need it because the card will die in about a year or two because nVidia used shitty materials for it.

Just been reading some spec on my current graphics card and it appears to be a notebook one, so will these other graphics cards work?

I have heard just different, the G94 cards start failing.

Only laptop cards have died within two years so far, due to the rapid heating/cooling. Desktop cards are pretty much safe for many years to come.

Then it must be both.

Some of the reviews I've seen have indicated that desktop cards have failed right around 8 months as well.  Either way, it would be best for whoever gets one to register it for warranty.  I know I did.

slinky is a good mate of mine.

we were thinking that cos his PC is a micro case (it's literally fucking tiny) he might be somewhat limited to what he can get.

mATX cases are in general not much shorter than midtowers.

it's a lot smaller than my previous case, and that wouldn't have fitted a p31

mATX boards usually have around half a PCI-E slot space after the slot. Which more than well fits an 8600.

oh good. to clarify, since he didn't mention, the main aim for the gpu would be to run eve on all high etc, and the odd other game.

- Should fit
- Is cheap
- Should run EVE all high with respectable fps.

Since that is exactly the same card as the PALIT 8600GT I have in my computer, I can tell my experiences. It ran 50C idle and under 70C load in my computer, that has side panel open. It was overclocked from 540/700 to 620/750 then though.

hmm.

the PC sits down the side of his bed and acts as a media centre really (nice toy tbh), but when shit like eve is running it gets fucking hot.

we could prob fit a few fans into his rig, and control the speed with some app to keep everything quiet (because it's next to the bed)
