  • Combining 2 Separate HDD's to show as one under My Computer?

Hey, when I got my comp this was already done, I had 2x250GB's showing as a single 500GB on my Computer, I think after I reformatted awhile ago they went separate again, I have searched on the internet how to get them as one but I don't know what I'm looking at to be honest, RAID or something keeps coming up and I don't have a clue about RAID.

Can anyone give me instructions on how to join them? is it done after an OS is installed through software/bios or what? I intend to re-install my Vista Premium later on tonight.

I'm not sure what specs are needed but my mobo is a K8N Ultra Sli.
Not sure what the 2 HDD's are, if the make/model etc is needed I'll open up the case and get info.

Any help is greatly appreciated and karma and sexes given for any help.

I combined my two HD's into one, I think its done when you are reformatting the hd's when you are selecting how you want the new space to utilized so right after u reformat right then u start from scratch then select how much space  u want.

What you are trying to do is known as "RAID 0"

Disk failure itself isn't affected, but if one fails then you lose all data. I run it myself but regret it because of the reliability issues. (already had one die on me!) Your motherboard should support it, you will need to reformat to have them in RAID 0 though.

So say I deleted the partitions, before I install my OS, will I have to set them to RAID 0 then? how would I do that?

setting up raid 0

Any of the first few ought to help you.

Or it was JBOD.

More likely RAID0 from your motherboard (aka software / hybrid RAID).

Do it as a JBOD setup.

Indeed, if all you want is two HDDs combined as one big HDD, JBOD is the way to go.

Note: you also don't need hardware RAID to do this - Windows XP (and I assume Vista) can do this via software (though you may require XP pro (not sure, 'cos pro is all I've got and I've never checked on other versions)).
