.Sup, running two sticks won't use all the capability of the board/CPU, but there will still be dual channel support, with the ability to simply add another two sticks when you feel like it, and utilize tri-channel. Just like you can stick one 2GB stick in a mobo with only two slots, and then add another one for dual-channel.
Dual/tri-channel is also very overhyped. Essentially, it's just fusing the buses of the sticks to one, wider bus. Instad of using 2x64bit, dual-channel (Interleaved) makes it 1x128bit. Tri-channel makes it 192- or 256-bit over 3x64 or 4x64-bit (Can't remember which) It provides marginal (~10% at best) performance enhancement when using multiple sticks, due to the sticks b-eing handled as one. For just one stick, dual-channel wouldn't do much good, without major changes in the RAM technology. Multi-channel memory provides some extra bandwidth, but running dual-channel on a tri-channel capable system isn't going to kill off more than maybe 1% of the performance, as there are virtually no applications out there that actually take advantage of super-high memory bandwidth, as they're not that memory consuming. Things that use around 2GB RAM and up (Like rendering fractals) will notice an improvement.
In short, multi-channeling is fusing your sticks to one.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
