Due to the recent success of the BF2s folding team, we're going to try taking it one step further, namely, folding rig adoption and donation.

The concept is simple: If you have an old, unused computer, you can post about it, and get it sent to someone who will give it electricity and bandwidth to fold. If you have electricity, space and bandwidth to spare, you can apply to become a host.

How to donate a computer

To donate a computer, simply post it in this thread. You can also donate parts or money. We (me or max) will contact you about it, and suggest a host. Due to the nature of this community, we will be keeping some strict regulations on that matter. Only one of us will PM you on this matter. If anyone else tries to get hold of a computer, please contact us immideatly. Our e-mail is bf2sfah@gmail.com

Do note that you, the donor, are expected to pay for shipping of the system. If that is a major concern, there might be arrangements.

How to donate money

To donate money, simply click here. We currently accept donations over PayPal only. The money donated would be used to pay for shipping, and possible spare parts. Hosts do not have access to this account. Money donors are honoured under this post.

Minimum requirements for a donated system:

For obvious reasons, we can't accept everything. If we were to accept Pentium 2s, 3s and 486', we'd have a bunch of flooded hosts, not doing any good, in a month.

The minimum class processor you can donate, is a Northwood-core Pentium 4, or an AMD Athlon XP/MP 2000+. Any Athlon with a higher rating, or Core 2 Duo is more than welcome. You can send whole, assembled computers, or parts.

As for parts, here's a list of requirements:

PartSpec
ProcessorsPentium 4 Northwood or Athlon XP 2000+ and up.
Hard drives10GB and up
RAMSDRAM modules, 256MB and up, all DDR/DDR2 accepted.
MotherboardsAny working Socket 478/462/754/775/939/AM2 boards accepted.
Power supplies350w and up
Video cardsAll GeForce 8- and 9 series, all Radeon 2- 3- and 4 series accepted, as well as low-end PCI/AGP/PCI-E cards for monitoring.
Optical drivesDVD compatible.
MonitorsAny LCD.
Input devicesMice and keyboards might be needed at times.
CoolingAny aftermarket or stock cooler for any of the mentioned sockets and graphics cards are welcome.

How to become a host

To become a host, you need to contact me or max via e-mail or PM, clarifying what resources you have. We will discuss, and judge if you are capable of becoming a host, and recieve rigs. On top of trust, you will need to fill these requirements:

  • You will be able to keep the computers donated online and folding for BF2s 24/7, with minimal downtime.
  • You have experience with assembling, installing, and maintaining computers.
  • You have a 24/7 internet connection
  • You do not use the computers for anything resource-craving, other than folding (Using one as a file server or similar is acceptable, as long as it doesn't have any major impact on the folding capabilities of the computer)
  • You will do what you can to repair a computer that breaks. You are not expected to pay for spare parts. If available, we can take money from the BF2sfah PayPal account.

There will be no public host-list. Everything will go through me and max, in an effort to keep this organized, and above all, legit. If we were to just let this run loose, the risk of someone screwing up (or scamming someone) multiplies. We will make sure needed parts go to the right host, and keep the hosts balanced, so that there isn't one with 15 rigs and three others with 2.

We currently have no US or AU hosts, only EU ones.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

For people with half-finished computers in need of parts, here's a list of special parts needed.

  • Socket 939 motherboard (1)
  • DDR RAM (Much as possible)
  • Socket 478 motherboard (FSB533 compatible) (1)
  • Socket 775 motherboard (Conroe-L compatible) (1)

I don't really have a lot atm, but here's something to start us off

Opteron 170 - skt 939 2.0GHz (I don't have a mobo to check it in, should work, but no guarantees)
TT Big Typhoon
couple of fans
80GB sata disk if really necessary
pci ethernet controller
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I have only personally gone through two generations of computer, and I am currently using my old one as a server. I will gladly donate my old server when I graduate and my current computer becomes the new server.

The biggest problem I see is shipping. It's not cheap or easy to ship these big suckers, especially when the only two hosts (I assume) are in Europe.

That's why you take it apart and ship it without a case

Join fah under your own name. If you have a full functional rig it does make more sense to fold yourself. Shipping parts should cost all that much, they aren't that heavy.

I guess I just don't understand why people would want to ship their computers or parts, why can't they fold themselves, instead of shipping their computer to someone else so that they can do it? Seems like a huge waste of time and money to me.

I was assuming you wanted the case too.

I would do it, on this computer and my server, except I have performance concerns that I messaged freezer with. I can send them to you as well if you want max.

There is fah for linux as well correct?

you don't need to worry about performance. It shouldn't affect you day-to-day operation and if you're something that needs loads of performance you can always shut it down for that time

There is a client for linux, in many regards better than the windows one

Some people don't have green energy, or the space to have a bunch of computers. We offer to take those unused computers, and provide that space and energy, so that they can do something better than just lie around, or get thrown away, killing polarbears.

Folding at home (or simply fah) is a distributed computing project that studies protein folding when your PC is idle. The data that is produced from this project helps us understand how proteins work, why they sometimes they fail at folding properly and it will hopefully help us find cures for horrible diseases. The diseases that could be cured or at least better understood by this include Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
