I don't get it. Why would you send your computer or parts to someone on bf2s? What's more you have to pay for the pleasure of it? Lmao.

What's folding?

Folding at home (or simply fah) is a distributed computing project that studies protein folding when your PC is idle. The data that is produced from this project helps us understand how proteins work, why they sometimes they fail at folding properly and it will hopefully help us find cures for horrible diseases. The diseases that could be cured or at least better understood by this include Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

So why wouldn't you sell your computer, go onto the Cancer research website and donate to them? Or any other charity...

Not to someone on bf2s, to contribute to fah. As in contribute to researching cures for diseases.

Also, you are wrong anyways, I got my motherboard from Zimmer, who paid to send it to me, as well as gave it to me for free. Not everyone thinks like you do.

This is a great concept. I'd participate, but I don't usually leave any computers idling. I don't like the heat/noise/usage of electricity. Although in the coming months I may have some spare parts I could donate.

As max said, charity. They'll be put into use for research about dieseases and such. Not everyone wants to have their old, loud, half-working pile of junk running in their living room.

That there simply are people who like to help others, or, in this case, research.

Max gave me a ~500€ laptop for free, he paid shipping.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

the uniprocessor client has very long deadlines. Even if you only use your PC an hour a day you should be able to meet the deadline

Cooler needs to be re-attached but everything is fine. If you don't want all the components you can choose.

Well, like I edited into my previous post, in the coming months I may have some parts to donate. My PC is in a bit of a repose right now anyway. Does this client work on Macs?

I suppose I'd be offended that you've reached such a conclusion by me not understanding wtf this is. But you're right, if losing my own money means helping others which might not even happen. Well, I'll pass.

What kind of person does not have $20 to spare for shipping? Even I have $20 to spare for shipping. Folding is presenting a huge help for the researchers, who don't have to do these calculations and tests in the lab. The more silicon they can get, the better.

It's just like one of those cans with a coin hole that you'll find in supermarkets, except, this one's got a hole for old computers.

That's what we're looking for. Those machines could present a good 700PPD, if the P4 is HT'd. What would you say is better, jord, letting those machines lie around and collect dust, or clean'em up and put'em to work on curing cancer?

If I had $20 to give to a charity I'd give it to one. Probably a Childrens charity. But no, I don't have $20 to give. "What kind of person doesn't have $20 to spare?". One that doesn't have a job and pays for his own shit...

you donate spare CPU and GPU cycles for scientific research. If you have hardware but don't want to run it, you can send it to someone else, so that they can donate those spare cycles

I would say that it would be better to sell off the parts and donate the money to a charity, rather than one or two people gathering a bunch of old computers and running them 24/7 towards a POSSIBLE cure, it is not even guaranteed that any of us doing this will help anyone or anything. I would rather donate the money to a charity that gets real results.

@ jord, and by the way my Dad is on CONTRACT at Cancer research (big cheques, why not hire and not waste money on staff? ) and they are wasting money on expensive enterprise level systems that they will never really utilise. Do NOT donate to cancer research. I am giving away my stuff for free for a good cause and that makes me feel happy.

I won't, I don't donate to charities and won't until I'm a millionaire and can spare it. I feel good about myself already without paying for it.

I think some of you forget that not all of us are as fortunate as you to have spare components lying around, half the userbase here aren't even 18, they don't have money to spare for such luxuries like this.

Edit: Even if they did have spare money lying around, I'm sure they could donate it to a more needy charity locally, that is actually proven to help people presently, I don't know much about the fah thingy, but if I spend x amount of hours folding it doesn't help anyone at present, donating to a childrens hospice does.

I can donate 10€ but not an old Celeron 600MHz PC that I fixed and sold for 150€. Some can afford donating expensive components some cannot.
