Not surprised after the iphone and previous ipod sales.

I do think though that Google will find a way to surpass them again. Probably with a take over of Amazon or Yahoo.

Anyone else remember when Apple were known as Apple Macintosh...?

They sold out.

When they decided to diversify and make more than just Mac computers, they decided to drop the "Mac" so the brand wouldn't be thought of as pc only makers.

You still have Apple Mac's - which are the pc's that used to be known as Macintosh pcs, but again it's one of the Apple products that now use the stupid i precursor. So you can have an iMac pc.

It's ironic though, because an iMac was the first product to use the i.

If I remember right Google is pushing ahead with their mobile phone Operating System which looked seriously impressive so that'll get them started on the mobile front, give it 5 years they'll be releasing their own phones to compete directly with apple etc.

iPod is going to slowly die, the days of the dedicated mp3 players are gone, it's all about the phones.

Lemme know when I can store 160Gb of music on a phone and keep a decent rate of audio compression / quality, along with all the additional extras and audio utilities such as an equalizer that I demand and use on a daily basis.

... I don't think phones are going to replace mp3/mp4 players anytime soon. Phones thesedays just try to be a 'jack of all trades' and do everything at once, but they don't do any of it in a particularly amazing way (i.e. picture/movie capture, mp3 storage, internet surfing).

Phones are going to replace music players for the consumer masses. I'd like to say idiot blobs, but there's the chance of offending someone.

Oh, and does this whole market value shenanigans actually mean anything?

Yes, market value and market shares are perfectly reliable means of measuring a companies strength and 'ranking' in the consumer market.

It doesn't actually mean one is growing faster than the other though, or making greater profits.

It's just a 'my penis is bigger than yours' thing.
