If you look at something in the distance with low anti aliasing it looks like shit to be short.
Lol half life had terrible anti aliasing - a texture 5 feet away from you would get all blurry and shit

Low anti aliasing: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cd/Aliased.png
Higher: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7c/Antialiased-sinc.png

What you are referring to is anisotropic filtering, not anti-aliasing.

The two main ways AA is done is super sampling and multi-sampling.

Super sampling is the older method which took the frame being rendered and raised the resolution, then dithered the image back down to whatever resolution the frame was originally rendered.  This works because higher resolutions use more pixels to make the image.  This leaves lines that are not perfectly vertical or horizontal (lines with aliasing) looking smoother.  This method is still available for use, but is now usually referred to as a super high quality mode.  While this method works well, it also creates the biggest hit to performance.

Multi-sampling uses a method of blending the colors of textures at the vertices of lines that are not perfectly horizontal or vertical.  This method provides AA at a much lower performance penalty, but because of blending on the edges of aliased lines, it can leave them looking a little softer than super sampled AA.

This is by no means complete, but a down and dirty basic of AA.

Very well.

Also added, once you try AA in BF2, there is no going back to non-AA.

No kidding. They even have KOTOR, which isn't graphics heavy by any means.
