The idea behind this thread is simple.

New or current uni students post up their experiences, problems and tips regarding both the educational and social aspect of University.

This can be for university anywhere in the world, EU/US or w/e.

Also, could you submit your name and university, and i'll try and make a list of where everyone is, and what they're studying - just out of interest.

Im probably one of only a few who is going to post here who has done University as a part timer. I work for a company and did a 4 year apprenticeship, and they sent me to College for 2 years and Uni for 3 years (so far) for qualifications, etc. They paid for my tuition fees, and I recieved no reduction in pay for those days off to go to Uni/College.
I now have a BTEC and HND in Civil Engineering AND NO DEBTS

I have the option to go on and complete the final 2 years of Uni and get the full BSC if I want, but thats dependant if I want to move from a Technician to an Engineer @ work.

From my POV, the "usual side" of Uni doesnt exist in terms of roommates, parties, drinks and debts. The only social part is going to the bar during lunch and anything thats involved with group work during lectures.

Problems Ive had is understanding the Uni system: I dont know what its like at others, but communication is utter shite and is all done via emails and their website. With a work email address I look at 5 days a week, the email to my student email address which I dont look at. First time I looked at it was this year (my third year) and it was clogged with emails from lecture'ers from THREE years ago regarding "next weeks lecture"!
Its like...wtf.

Big tip: dont hold out on coursework, and a LOT of revision is necessary for all exams. Unless you get an exam paper which was an exact replica of your practise paper like we had

All the best tips and advice are actually financial. If you choose the subject and area that you genuinely enjoy and actually want to learn about then the work-load and motivation is no problem at all. Being able to rein-in your finances and properly budget is one of the most important skills you'll master whilst in your first-year-- or at least hopefully master anyway . Fresher's Week and the following weeks/months will probably be some of the greatest of your life (no understatement!) but you've got to remember that the drinking and expenditure is not sustainable. Not unless you happen to make friends with a few Eton boys who can pay for everything at least, haha!

But seriously- enjoy it. I'm only starting my second year now but the first year was an absolute beauty. University in my eyes is one of the most enjoyable experiences; it not only matures your character and gives you valuable life-experience, but also helps you go from being a reliant and dependant student into an independant and self-sustaining adult. Talk to everyone you see and keep your social circle wide... listen-in to every lecture/seminar/tutorial and keep your work-ethic up high.

m3thod gave some sound advice on coursework there, always get together and do it with other people, they will always have ideas that you would never have thought of.

When a lecturer tells you to read up on a topic after a lecture, do it.  I didn't bother in my first year, but did in my second and my results showed a marked improvement.  Just showing up to lectures is not enough.

Do not leave things till the last minute, you'll only find yourself heaping huge unnecessary amounts of stress upon yourself.

Wikipedia is fine to read up on the background of a subject and get a vague idea, but as m3th says, NEVER reference it.

Stay single, fuck around.

Read up on past papers and model answers for exams which you'll be sitting.  It gives you a great insight into the format of the exam and a lot of the time the questions are similar.  It will be invaluable to your preparations and I find this technique one of the most effective forms of revision.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

"Have a blast in your first year." Certainly did that. Maybe slightly too much of a blast in my second year.

"Do 100% coursework modules and cheat collaborate with course mates." In my case last year has to be all coursework because I suck ass at exams.

"Get your fucking 2.1" All anyone ever needs for a job tbh.

"Fuck as many women as you can." Seconded, watchout for the hoes though, don't want to increase any risks beyond what they already are.

"Always got to the university weekly pissup" or go thrice weekly to uni pissups. A must in first year.

"copy, paste and edit as much as you can." True dat.

"find the weighting between second and third year that will contribute towards final result" i.e. Notts is 40-60%

"unless you have rich parents learn how to budget and learn how to say no." Rich parents own.

"food in your stomach and a roof over your head > drunk." Defo.

"dont ever use wikipedia as a refernce you muppet", anyone that does this deserves to fail.

Here is one for British university student of which i abused every year for 5 years.

Open 2 student bank accounts and have one which you can demonstrates you are so poor you're scraping the barrell.  ALL university have a poverty fund provided by the goverment which is usually swilling to the brim as no one fucking knows about it.

ASK AROUND AND FIND IT ALL UNIVERSITIES HAVE ONE EEVN SHITTY EX POLYS.  Provide 3 months of bank statements and a coup[le of weeks later end up with £1000 or whatever they offer.

So yeah, £5000 of free money over 5 years spent it on getting wankered.  Passed this onto my kid bro who went to Brum Uni and he was abusing it too.

edit

try not to abuse the grad overdraft in the second graduate bank account, you're trying stay out of debt remember.

I start my first quarter ever in September, but I've learned quite a bit from my sister. read when you're told to, and don't be shy. there are 15000 students at university, chances are you're never going to see the people who you end up socially against. ie, hit on girls. if they hate you for it, well, you're probably not going to see them again. experiment with different social groups and find the right one for you.

edit: @god save the queen, if you're talking to me, i'm sorry that your life sucks and you can't afford a good school. why do you feel the need to persecute me for being able to go to a great college?
