So, I've been getting back into CoD4, PR and TF2 lately, but I'm hampered by unexpected performance issues. A few months ago, I could play them all just fine, with good settings and good frame rate. Now though (especially in TF2 and CoD) I have frame rate issues pop up whenever even the slightest bit of action occurs on screen. Now, my computer hasn't changed (component wise) as I have a laptop, and I figure that a little bit of aging (dust, heat, whatnot) could take a slight toll... but nothing nearly this significant.

So I decide to defrag... something I haven't done in months. Of course, the analysis of the Windows Defragger confirms that fragmentation is a problem.

So I start the defrag, go play some Wii, go get dinner with my family who I haven't seen in a week, watch some baseball and soccer at my friend's house, and then return home. "Defragmentation Complete" it says... but it also says something like "couldn't defragment some areas..." and then lists them. One of those was the CoD4 program files, and another one was the TF2 files. So I run steam's defragger on Tf2 and it says it's done almost instantly. Then I delete CoD4 thinking that I should just go for a clean reinstall.

If you're still reading, you're probably wondering why you're wasting your time... and truth be told you probably ARE wasting your time, as my question is this:

Is there anything I said above that seems abnormal to you? Now, I haven't had a chance to play TF2 or CoD4 yet, so I couldn't tell you if it worked... but I plan on playing some TF2 soon so I'll post again.

Someone once suggested I try a different Defrag program, and I downloaded the suggested one, and using it caused (or maybe it was coincidence, but it still happened...) a registry failure that meant wiping my entire hard drive and reinstalling windows. Fffffffucking fun. So I don't really want to try that again.

Anyway, I click on "analyze" on the windows defragger again and it says "You should defragment this volume."
But I just did!
Augh!

Is there at least 15% free space or whatever?
Also, try updating your graphics drivers. If things were working fine a few months ago, but aren't now, chances are that there are probably new drivers out (though I'm not sure why that should impact your gameplay if things were working fine before).

TBH, I don't think I've defragged in a very very long time, and all my games are running great.

Check for any viruses and spyware. Use CCleaner to clean out a lot of shit that has probably accumulated (and use the registry tool as well).

JKDefrag can do a little more than the Windows one, but not much unless you have enough space.

You could also try O&O Defrag.

Well if the defrag helped, it didn't help much. TF2 still gets a bit choppy.

What's your average FPS in CoD and TF2, and what GFX Card are you running?  Check for drivers like mtb0minime said, and do a full virus and/or spyware sweep.  I use Symantec for virus scanning, and Sybot: Search and Destroy to kill spyware, adware, etc.

Some files can't be defragged since they are in use, mostly OS files. I use Diskeeper which has an option "defrag on next boot" so it defrags those files before they come into use.
