I upgraded my sound card to an X-Fi model and i've been having problems running the BF2 with the X-Fi setting, it just says that my hardware is incompatible with that setting in BF2. I searched out on Google and also on the Creative knowledge base and Creative forums and found a couple fixes. A couple looked promising but to no avail didn't work and the one that was supposed to be 'the' offical fix didn't work either.

I've tried re-installing the drivers etc...re-naming the said .dll files etc etc....i wonder if its a residue driver issue from my old Audigy? I wouldn't even know where to start to find how to clean out the old files tho.

Has anyone else had this same experience? It does seem mostly apparent when people have used previous incarnations of Sound Blaster products then upgraded to X-Fi.

Did you by any chance buy the X-Fi Extreme Audio?

What X-fi version is it? Some X-fi's don't support ultra high settings.

I've had an X-Fi Gamer and an X-Fi Fatal1ty and neither of them supported the so-called 'Ultra High' settings in BF2.

Fuck it... stupid marketing gimmick anyway!

I had fatality and it supported ultra high settings.

The Extreme Audio is not detected as an X-fi by BF2.

There's your problem, it doesn't support the setting. Unless there's been an update I don't know about for it.

Ok then, i can live with that, i just thought it wasn't working full stop and i hadn't read anywhere that all X-Fi's wasn't supported, seems like a bit of a rip off if you ask me!

But i guess thats something to do with the memory on the cards between the entry level models and the models further up the chain.

Thanks tho

No, the card doesn't have an X-fi chip its just called "X-fi" (Creative often confuses us). Make sure you set your BF2 audio settings to hardware acceleration and to high settings.

Yeah, it had always been on hardware before when i had my Audigy, i'd have kept the Audigy but it had a tendency to error and do wierd things and would never accept newer drivers.

Well if that X-Fi card hasn't even got an X-Fi chip it seems even more absurd to label it with X-Fi, i'm actually close to returning it and just picking up the standard Audigy.

What OS? The ultra high settings will not work in vista.

There is enough of a difference that I was contemplating installing xp on another drive just for 2142/bf2. But it's not huge.

Why can I do it?
I have X-fi Gamer and vista 64. I can set it on ultra high.
Works like a charm!

But with no hardware acceleration which sucks.

Post your drivers plz.

In Vista, if I select "x-fi" it tells me my hardware is incompatible. If I select "hardware" and "ultra high" it allows me to do it, but when I immediately return to the audio screen it has changed the setting to "high".

None of these problems exist for me in XP.

Yeah, I don't know what's going on. Ultra high on BF2 is highlighted in red and cannot be selected.

Are you using alchemy for this? I'm not sure if alchemy is even needed for these games, but I would really like to know why others are capable of running the top settings and I'm not.

I'm tempted to install vista 64 on my extra HDD and reinstall everything, but that should not make a difference.

I believe it might make a difference.
I had the card in my old pc. When i bullied my new pc, it didn't seem to fit between the 2 8800Ultras.
One day i decided to force it in place, which I did. After installing I couldn't use my surround. There were surround in BF2, but not with music nor movies. Bottom line, it didn't work correct!

I reinstalled Vista64 after having XP32 for a week. This time I installed Vista with the card inside. And it works perfect! Surround in games, music and movies.
And no, without alchemy.

Didn't you have to have creatives driver set to "Game mode" for x-fi to work in game?

Try downloading the creative console thing where you can switch it between like entertainment mode, game mode, ect...

Yep. Creative console comes with the drivers. I always only installed that without installing other software.

LMAO! I'm such a noob. To think that all this time I could not enable the ultra settings because of something so minor.

I never, NEVER remember to switch the console to  game mode when starting up games.

Problem solved. Another victory for the BF2s tech section.
