A palate cleanser by popular request; you’ll remember our heroines here from the Butt-Pat That Wasn’t. The official Olympics site has highlights of the match but this snippet had to be rescued from oblivion by Tivo.

Good lord — don’t they know who runs this network now? Click the image to watch.

Tonight U.S.A. Olympians Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh finished as the winning team of the Women’s Volleyball games in their successful run, being the first team to win back-to-back gold medals.

And who did they make a definitive point to thank besides their families? It seemed obvious to me how much Kerri wanted this to get out to the viewing public, and it did in a big way. They thanked our President for his inspiration and for all he’s doing. They are very proud of him, as you can tell. So for all the nay-sayers who were against President Bush attending the Olympics, it mattered to these two women. So it mattered to me.

Not saying much about them if they need someone important like the President to play as hard as they can tbh.

I guess that's true if you only heard one single sentence after going on about their dead parents and other familial support. Jesus Christ people only hear what they want to.

I'm glad they mentioned him. This whole "hate Bush" thing has become a fad. I guess he could be inspirational since he hasn't resigned or given up, despite all this shit and bad press he's had to go through. And besides, isn't that inspirational when the president of your country (and a very large one at that) shows up to the Olympics to watch you play?

You mean because he was in another country while thousands of innocent people were being murdered in Georgia?

O ya.

The whole "hating Bush" thing is only a fad if you like him.

Wow, what a complete 180. As soon as insulting Bush becomes "unpopular" people are leaping to his defence? He's still an idiot, he's still a poor leader, he's still made the international opinion of America and Americans in general go down the toilet. The argument "Bush is fine because the next guy will probably be just as bad" is bollocks, when you compare shit and manure you still walk away smelling the same.
Maybe history will see Dubya in a different light, it seems to always be the way. However no-one can seriously say that he's been a good President can they?

Lookit that, a political debate. Well done to the Vollyballers (is that how you say that? Vollyballers?) anyway.

They thanked him for (personal) inspiration.. Whatever that might be. They didn't say thanks for "x" reason or "y" reason. It seems silly to judge that inspiration on what was probably a personal conversation between them.

Oh, and portraying the President in any positive light is still very unpopular.

To be honest I dont think anyone who dislikes President Bush really gives a shit about what anyone else thinks.  I mean, he won two times.

And did they really cut the girls off?  The video I watched just showed them thanking him and that's it.

That's an Aussie in 2nd place there, who recently gave an interview about that moment and how the two men had told him they were going to give a "black power salute"

They actually wanted to know if he was okay with it. He said he'd be humbled (iirc or words to that effect).

Pretty amazing moment in sporting history.

Cut from the NBC site. Otherwise I just would have linked to it.
