Well, well, well...the Rooskies are back in town. Tonight it is reported that not only have Russia halted all military co-operation with NATO but they are also preparing to sell weapons to America's best buddy Syria...

Is this the beginning of how things are going to be for the foreseeable future or just more macho posturing that won't really rock the boat?

Cold war schmold war. This is Russia just doing a USA on things. Violate the territorial intergrity of Serbia? Then we'll violate the territorial intergrity of Georgia. Invade an energy-resource pivotal state - Iraq - on a shoddy pretext? We'll invade Georgia. Sign agreements to create military installations on Russia's western border? Fine, we'll sell arms to anyone who's buying - China, Syria, Iran, whoever. Don't listen to the wishes of the international community? Fine, neither will we.

If the west pursues this bullshit any further then yes there will be some form of 'cold' war but realistically it can't happen: there is no appetite for it in Old Europe and at the moment we need Russia more than we need anyone else when it comes to energy. Our governments will happily shake hands with the devil just as the US does with Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Russia's trying to relive its yesteryears, but failing quite badly at it.

Tbh I don't see how they've failed. Zero repercussions for acting overly heavy-handed against a moronic Georgia and then being stubborn about leaving (which is reminiscent of another situation I know of...).

It will be interesting to see how a watered down sequel to the cold war will play out given that Europe knows they need Russia this time around. Sequels are usually never as good though.

Well stated. Cold war may not be the name of the game, in fact I think that it will be rather hot.

Given the propagation of nuclear technology to countries like Pakistan and Israel, who are not exactly on best terms with their neighbours, it will be hardly surprising to see MAD come out again. However, in the increasingly common cases of asymmetrical warfare, that will spell the doom of smaller challengers, like Georgia. Twenty bucks says that Russia will find a way to prove that Georgia attacked Russia (in the nest three years), and take it over. Same with the US and Iran, possibly North Korea. The real éminence grise, now, is China. Whomever can win China onto their side (Small nations--Uganda, Sudan, Burma) or the US. Also, the European Union, as the geographical centre of the world, will not want to play into anyone's hands.

Just watch all this be true within a decade.

I think Russia should invade Poland and Germany out just to show the US that they can do nothing about it.

The US needs to keep its nose out of other country's bussiness.  Go Russia, Yippeee.

I think Russia does what is in it's best interest, just like the US. But Russia isn't dependant on the US acting first. They will do what they want anyway (if they can get away with it), just like the US.

How is Israel the Devil? They may do wrong things but they are in hostile territory and much of it is needed self defense.

i only have praise for Russia. They are standing up for Europe while we all submit to a barbaric murderous beast.

I don't want this defence shield and Russia is the only nation speaking for me, this shield will b used to kill and attack European nations if they don't bend over and face west.

You are deluded rammunition, even Che Guevara could see that Russia were every bit as bad as the US and worse. The Russians are doing exactly the same thing as the US has been doing for the last 10 years, how can it be wrong when the US do it but right when Russia do it?

Or he may be annoyed because the US is consistently criticized and yet everyone calls them when they need (military) help.

That's always how it works. If ordinary citizens are lucky, they will benefit as well. But don't count on it.

Or because America thinks everyone wants them to intervene with military assistance. Take Georgia for example, pretty much the only people that want America to help there are Georgians.

You mistake the desires of politicians with the desires of the masses. I for one am an isolationist and believe that International intervention, if it really must come to that, should be done on a united front through the UN otherwise you end up with rogue nations who go around picking their fights as and when it suits them. The US pick their fights when it suits them and there is almost always a personal gain to be had; that is why Sudan is still a hellhole and why Zimbabwe is still a violent dictatorship while oil-rich Iraq is building their new Government. Russia used to do the same thing during the cold war and it appears they may be attempting to bring that mentality now.
