My EEE PC 900 came in today. This is easily the coolest thing ever ... Got it all up and running to a virtual clone of my main computer and it runs beautifully!!!

I highly recommend them to anyone who wants a small computer toy. Can't wait to show it off back in Vienna and use it around the city. Now I still have to learn to type properly on it ...

WTF is that? Is it like a mini computer almost like a laptop or something?

Look it up on New Egg.com

I got the Win XP version for it. Not a desktop replacement, but for mobile computing, it cannot be beat.

I just don't get the appeal of these things?

Why would I want one over say, a Macbook Pro? Or if size and travel was my concern... a Macbook Air?

A MacBook pro is good if you're not a gamer, but a MacBook air has absolutely no use.

because they cost 5 times as much and macs just plain suck

those eee pc's seem pretty fail to me. i would much rather have a regular laptop for around the same price

Probably something to do with the fact it's not £1000 or £1500 but £200.

Ok sorry I didn't mean to come across as an Apple fanboy there . It was just that they are easily-recognised examples of 'popular' laptops, i.e. alternatives to these EEE PC's. I realize these EEE PC's are cheap as dirt but that doesn't surprise me- the specs on these things are atrocious. I understand the need for a small and portable laptop but I'd rather get a 15" monitor and have a bit more storage-space and higher-spec hardware!

So, to repeat my first question, what makes these so revolutionary or greater than any other notebook/laptop?

You would spend $2000 for a laptop that is just like the other ones, but a tad thinner?

The idea is it being VERY portable, not 15" portable, like 9" portable. That size difference is substantial.

+ if you're only using it for lets say, web browsing, typing or viewing pictures on the move, then this size is perfectly adequate.

Actually. An EEE pc will probably last you longer than a MacBook Pro because of the awful overheating in them. It is also Linux based, which means less crashing, safer, and faster. I would like to try it out, just to see how it performs.

Samsung are brining out the equivalent of it, but with touch features in it and it will be thinner than the Air. I would like to see how that fares up against it.

Well the point in Asus EE PC is its low price. They tried to make a PC for everyone.
