Ok sorry I didn't mean to come across as an Apple fanboy there . It was just that they are easily-recognised examples of 'popular' laptops, i.e. alternatives to these EEE PC's. I realize these EEE PC's are cheap as dirt but that doesn't surprise me- the specs on these things are atrocious. I understand the need for a small and portable laptop but I'd rather get a 15" monitor and have a bit more storage-space and higher-spec hardware!

So, to repeat my first question, what makes these so revolutionary or greater than any other notebook/laptop?
Actually. An EEE pc will probably last you longer than a MacBook Pro because of the awful overheating in them. It is also Linux based, which means less crashing, safer, and faster. I would like to try it out, just to see how it performs.

Samsung are brining out the equivalent of it, but with touch features in it and it will be thinner than the Air. I would like to see how that fares up against it.
Theres an XP version too.

It still sounds like a gimmick. It's heated nicely and runs on Linux... what's new?

This sounds almost like a fanboyism thing, very much like Apple

The "promised" low price never arrived. It was expected at $200 but is generally selling for $350 - $400.

The point of the EEE is portability and usability first of all. It may not be incredibly fast, but with the pre-installed Linux shit on it, it performs surprisingly well.

I wouldn't touch the XP version.

I thought they wanted to make a PC for 300€. I think they succeeded. But the newer version are getting more expensive.

Whats wrong with XP? If its cause of the choppiness you can strip down XP and it will run incredibly fast.

You would spend $2000 for a laptop that is just like the other ones, but a tad thinner?

How much does it cost in Austria? I was just looking at Acer Aspire One.
I got mine from t-online-shop.at for €381.90 shipped. SATURN was selling them for €400, but you had to join a massive waiting list. I had mine in 5 days. Hartlauer is selling them for €420.

That is the 70x model. That screen is much smaller than mine and the speakers are in the screen.

For everyone saying they would rather have a normal notebook: This thing weighs 0.9kg WITH THE BATTERY. Plus, if you're buying it as an extra machine for ONLY portable use, it does the job very well.

That HP MiniNote ... lol. So many people sell those to get an EEE (there are like 10 different EEE models). BTW - does your HP have a multi-touch pad??? MINE DOES!!!!!

You guys have to try it to believe it. But anyway, here is my desktop. The background is the dash of a Lambo Reventon. On a black EEE 900 it looks hawt.

Zimmer, if you haven't used an EEE with 900 - stfu

Mine runs FLAWLESSLY. Only when I have quite a few things open (tabs + windows) does it begin to slow down. But it doesn't lag at all.

And Zimmer - you can get 2G Surf EEEs for $200 brand new. Know your stuff before you open that big mouth of yours.

Linux, if you are on the go and know how to use it, is much better to use. It's faster, has no extra shit and there are no legality issues surrounding it. The EEE isn't exactly very powerful - even though the newer version has an Intel Atom N270 and 1GB RAM + 40GB SSD ( shit, is that not just like the MacAir? ) - and thus it's probably a better option to go for the Linux version. I saw the interface and played around with it, it's very intuitive and nice. Not snazzy, but good enough to enjoy looking around.

Uzique: Where is the fanboism? It's a revolutionary PC which is aimed at young kids and older people who cannot AFFORD a more expensive computer. It does everything a basic user needs and it's cheap. I see absolutely nothing wrong with ASUS creating this. There is nothing else like it on the market, and kids need access to a computer more and more. I really don't see why you should be getting al uptight about this... The MacAir or MacBook are cons for the price they are. I would rather buy a cheap Acer and get a hacked version of OSX on it. I guarantee you it will run faster and better.

What the fuck? I am supporting the EEE, not bashing it. Don't tell me to shut the fuck up when I know perfectly well what I am talking about.

I also know what I am talking about when it comes to Linux and Windows. Windows has NEVER been faster than Linux. You are on XP, chapeau for you, I don't care. I was only saying that I would have gone for the Linux.

That big SSD model you're talking about is probably one of the 1000 models. Those are just a tiny bit smaller than one of those Sony Vaio 11" models (though at a fraction of the cost and performance).

You said XP is utter crap on the EEE when it truly is not. The only gripe I have with it is that I've had to move a lot of programs around to the second SSD, but that's no big deal at all because in the end I know everything about the computer and not everything is hidden by the factory.

that is pretty neat. I needed something this to rdp and access email while at work (we can't use our work pcs/internet). I opted to get a phone with wifi/winmobile, but this is a bit more practical.

Why would you want anything to do with Mac?
People are free to buy whatever they want. I thought western nations were places where people are free to buy and think, so whats the problem with Macs?
Macbook pro is a perfect machine for both Graphic/Audio Video sector but it performs well also with games, I have on my self.
But I do agree that Macbook air is really expensive, and just because its thin and light doesn't mean its worth 1500€.
But still everybody is free to buy what they want.

QFT. the reason mac has the college market pretty much cornered is because they really are perfect machines for a college student. quite thin, very light, well built, no real gaps and loose-fitting parts (ie they look crisp and nice and last well) like i've seen in dells and HPs, and pretty damn simple for the basic web browser and research paperist.

there's no reason to fanboy a windows box over a mac (and vise versa). to each his own and whatnot.

What's Western nations got to do with it. I'm well aware that anyone can do what they want. But if I can save just one person from wasting money, then I'm a happy man.

Ender, the EEEs come with a Xandros distro. But a lot of people (the Linux nerds) ditch it for some form of Ubuntu.

OK, finally made some pictures of the EEE.

In comparison to the Acer Aspire that I normally use:
