There has been zero factual evidence presented by either side, and this is getting unnecessarily out of hand. I would appreciate it if everyone would go take a second to soak their heads before resuming the e-smackdown.
Personally I feel that the biggest reason for having the rules there is to give some of these kids more of a chance at a bit of a life. Being pushed to be an Olympic champion by the time you're what, 13, in a competitive country like China? If the kid wants it, more power to them, but if they're being pushed too hard by the state, or more likely in the U.S. their parents then enforcing the rules could help to alleviate that. I remember they did a story on the Chinese female diver, can't remember her name, but at one point she wrote a letter begging and pleading her parents to let her come home and quit diving. Honestly I'm not sure being the greatest female diver is worth such a shitty lifestyle in your formative years.
It is not just the U.S. protesting, I believe it was an Italian coach that was originally bringing this up, well before the Chinese won. He personally felt like the rule should be done away with, as I think many in the community do, but if the rules are there, follow them.
