So as I recently wrote in another thread, I have been having performance issues with TF2 and CoD4 when in high-action settings. I never used to have any problems, so that is why it's unusual.

I thought a defrag and other computer cleanup would work, but it didn't.

I then thought new drivers would help. They didn't.

Then, I just turned the settings (which I can usually run at a fairly decent level) all the way down. Still no luck.

I've noticed that in CoD, it gets choppy whenever another person gets close to me, or when I'm watching a lot of gunfire. In Tf2, it seems to be most apparent when a heavy is firing his minigun or a pyro (but not myself) is in view firing his flamethrower.
I'm running on a laptop, a dell inspiron 1705.
2gb ddr2 ram
nVidia 7900go
C2D @ 2.0something ghz.

I am really out of ideas now. Can someone help?

Sounds like it is your connection to the internet, not your computer. What is your ping on your favorite servers?

I don't think it's my connection... because it really looks like visual lag. But, my ping is anywhere from 20-80 on my favorite servers, and it doesn't jump when I'm in these situations. But you know... I may just try fiddling with my router (I'm on wireless too, so I'll try plugging in). Thanks for the tip, and I'll get back to you on whether or not it works, but I have to say I doubt it.

Plugged into the router.
Pinging 8 on this server... still getting choppiness.

Well, your video card is aging, but it should be alright, what kind of temps do you see when you are gaming?

Also, what other processes are running while you are gaming? Get a SS of your task manager window so I can see. Is it possible you picked up a virus or malware, what kind of programs do you have for that?

I use AVG and Spybot, and how do I check my temps?

I don't think that shows temps, does it?

Yeah, there is another tab that says Sensors, that gives you temps

Ugh....
I solved it.

Fucking nVidia control panel (and I swear to whatever god you believe in, I didn't do this) was set to AAxabazillion and AFxabazillion and one. Basically, at the hardware level, I was running max settings for everything. That explains why the games didn't look significantly worse when I turned the settings down. Well fuck. What a waste of time.
Thanks a ton for your help anyway. I'm gonna go find a squirrel and shoot it.

edit: not really, I love squirrels.
