EA Sports boss Peter Moore has said he doesn't support the move to sue consumers for illegal downloading - warning, "It didn't work for the music industry."

Moore was speaking to GamesIndustry.biz at the Leipzig Games Convention, following the announcement that five games companies are taking legal action against 25,000 file-sharing internet users.

"I'm not a huge fan of trying to punish your consumer," he said. "Albeit these people have clearly stolen intellectual property, I think there are better ways of resolving this within our power as developers and publishers.

"Yes, we've got to find solutions," Moore continued. "We absolutely should crack down on piracy. People put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into their content and deserve to get paid for it. It's absolutely wrong, it is stealing.

"But at the same time I think there are better solutions than chasing people for money. I'm not sure what they are, other than to build game experiences that make it more difficult for there to be any value in pirating games."

According to Moore, there are lessons to be learned from the experiences of other industries. "If we learned anything from the music business, they just don't win any friends by suing their consumers," he observed. "Speaking personally, I think our industry does not want to fall foul of what happened with music."

When asked whether EA has any plans to go down the same road as Atari, Codemasters and the other publishers launching the legal action, Moore replied, "Not as far as I'm aware. Regarding what EA needs to do - I can't comment on that. EA takes piracy very seriously, and people deserve to get paid for content they create.

"But as far as I'm aware, we have no plans, that I know of, to partner with Atari and Codemasters and chase down consumers," he added.

The best way to "build game experiences that make it more difficult for there to be any value in pirating games" is to create a system like BF2 or BF2142 where you have an online account and you have stats and what not, same with TF2 and other similar games.

Yeah you can download a copy of BF2 and play on single player, but that is no fun, the fun is earning the achievements and playing against real players, without a valid cd key you cannot.

The solution is not to sue everyone in the world, that is just a scheme to make more money.

Yeah that would work for some shooters but what about games with storyline?

Instead EA Puts bullshit like SecuROM and a limit of three activiations on a game like Mass Effect.

Instead of "punishing the consumer" that uses illegal content, they instead fuck the paying customer.  GREAT strategy.

How about that proposed "check-in" every ten days that they had in mind?  Maybe that was Bioware's idea only... but still, the shit idiots at EA certainly are looking at dumb ass methods of anti-piracy that will eventually just piss paying customers off.  Mark my and millions of others words.

The way to beat the pirates is to make the game such that without owning a copy you miss out on the core aspect of gameplay.

You can only play on cracked servers, unless you have a legit cd key...which you need to buy.

YES!

Honestly as a consumer piracy protection often makes for a bigger hassle then the prosecution of piraters...
I know first hand, I bought a copy of 2142 EB games, brand new in the wrapper. Apparently someones key generator, or something else got to my Key first, because it was already registered to another account. They then offered to sell me a new key.
What I learned: The guy who used some kinda key generator or crack to get my key before I did is playing the game for free... I tried to pay and got an extra $10 if I wanted EA to fix it...

Piracy protection annoys paying customers, chasing pirates annoys theifs.
He makes a valid point that the RIAA has actually hurt it self by turning so many people against themselves...  But I think if legal copies of CD's came with all kinds of protection people would hate them even more....

In fact didn't one of the bigger music companies release protected CD's that couldn't be copied and it was even worse for them then just prosecuting criminals?

You are not missing much from an EA game.
