Desktops allows you to organize your applications on up to four virtual desktops. Read email on one, browse the web on the second, and do work in your productivity software on the third, without the clutter of the windows you’re not using. After you configure hotkeys for switching desktops, you can create and switch desktops either by clicking on the tray icon to open a desktop preview and switching window, or by using the hotkeys.

I fail to see how having a bunch of windows across the Start Bar is a problem.

So does XP. There is a powertool that does exactly that
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

It's a fun gimmick but if anyone needs a lot of applications and a lot of screen estate, they're running multiple physical monitors.

I've always loved this feature and found it very practical to work with, even with multiple physical monitors. My one gripe is that you cannot see when people IM you on a different desktop. It needs a notification tab that can alert you to other windows requesting attention.

Edit: Definitely also needs a way to move windows between desktops.
