yeah that must be rightVicktorVauhn wrote:

Um... not really. A watch isn't something that requires grounbreaking technology for it to work... they have been around for a very very long time... Seem to be doing fine. The statement COULD be applied if someone was looking for a stupidly expensive computer and a stupidly expensive watch.... But I am pretty sure prices for computers are more justified than prices for watches.ghettoperson wrote:
Same could be said for a computer.
It comes down to justified to who?
Sam.... You only wear clothing you bought from the thrift store right? And even then you shop around and compare prices?
Get your shoes used, and only wear one pair?
Have any shirts with logos?
People spend fucking tons on jewelry, necklaces that do NOTHING.... If you are gonna wear a watch, and you have the money... why not wear a nice one?
Some watches get passed down from generation to generation, If its a quality watch lasting 20 years isn't extraordinary...
So if you buy a 1.5k watch, but keep it for 20 years.... your only paying $0.20 a day.
If you have ever bought a pair of shoes worth more then $75 that lasted less then a year of every day use your paying the same amount per day for them.
A watch is a piece of jewelry, and beyond that quality older watches are marvels of engineering. While no longer necessary due to modern manufacturing, the designs employed in old watches to keep accurate time are AMAZING. While its relatively simple to make an accurate watch now a days, making a watch that performs well used to be a true art. Many of the more expensive watches now reproduce these designs, not because its necessary like it used to be, but more to pay homage to them, or as an act of craftsmanship.
So you CAN go buy a $20 timex.... You can also buy plastic bracelets and a $10 folding chair. But some people want a nice piece of jewelry, and appreciate craftsmanship.
Not to make it sound too insignificant, but if your are an adult making good money a $1k isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.
because im not a complete twat like some of you and waist money on watches, that must also mean that i buy shitty clothes and own one pair of trainers
you guys sure love arguing about some dumb shit

I don't even wear a watch these days.

I just read about this watch that had:
- the time (ofc)
- date
- stopwatch
and everything was mechanical. Yes, even the date. The numbers in the date were on decagons that rotated mechanicly with the complex set-up of the watch. There was no battery, it was wound up.
Now, if I had the money, I would get it. Why? Because it's fucking brilliant. I guess you have to be interested in these kind of things though.
Have you ever read into old watch designs? Most definitely marvels of engineering.Zimmer wrote:
lol.
Oh, so I can make money from my watch and repay it? By doing what?
With a computer, I can earn the money to pay it back in less than a year. A watch? Um... it keeps the time. Yes, of course, there are different qualities of watches.... but a basic Swatch will last you for AT LEAST 10 years ( I would know, my friend has one ) and it cost somewhere in the region of $160. There is no justification for those exorbitant prices. It's called theft.
Buying a "fashion" t-shirt is no different to buying a normal t-shirt. Both were probably made in the exact same factory with the same materials. That comparison is useless.
Marvels of engineering? Really? I thought the marvels of engineering now were next generation graphics, monster CPUs, AI.... Not bloody watches. Yes, they may be improving over time, but they WERE marvels. If you can buy a decent watch for $170 and it keeps the time perfectly for 5 years ( not counting the tiny seconds lost, assuming that that happens on each watch ) then what the fuck do you need a $12000 one for?
There is NO comparison between an expensive computer and an expensive watch. An expensive watch is just vanity of the purest form. An expensive computer may be required for work, for hobbies or for large companies.... It was a poor and stupid comparison.
How much money are you making with your gaming computer? I do most of my CAD work on a computer that would cost a quarter of what most peoples gaming rig costs them.... Hell all that stuff on computer can be done by hand anyways... It was for a long time.
I am not in any way saying that an expensive watch is necessary. I am saying that it is just as justifiable as all the other excess you have. For time telling a $12 watch can be made to be accurate enough, I already said that. Yes to a large degree its vanity...But get off your high horse, even you are not completely with out vanity. I doubt you wear nothing but used plain white clothing, and I would be supprised if you have never bothered to comb your hair.
Your expensive computer that you need for your work... I presume when you got that job you showed up to the interview in sweat pants right? No? In some instances projecting a positive image of yourself through your appearance in nessisary... I know what you are thinking a nice shirt is miles away from a $12,000 watch right? Well if you live in the kinda world where you can afford a $12,000 watch wearing a timex is like showing up with a worn pair of Sketchers.
As far as not a marvel of engineering... Gimme a minute to dig you up some detail on some of the mechanics of some of the designs, until I read about a few different ones I didn't understand how complex they were either.
Again, not saying you have to spend a ton on a watch... But its a hobby to some who have money, get over it.
Naw, I am looking for ones that are quite a bit more involved then that... the ones I was just looking at also counted off the year and lunar phases too... but TBH thats just a matter of figuring out the pattern and correct gearing.... Still amazing considering the size of components... but I am talking about old watches with stuff like designs to eliminate error by correcting for the rotation of the earth/forces of gravity ect...Jenspm wrote:

K found some stuff... What you have to realize though Zimmer is that these expensive watches are fully mechanical, and to build a fully mechanical watch that is very accurate takes an amazing amount of precision due to the size.
General stuff on the complexity of a mechanical watch: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanical_watch
The thing with gravity is called a tourbillon, The swing arm that keeps the watches time changes speeds ever so slightly with gravitational forces.... This can be accounted for in the design, but since the watch isn't kept in the same orientation its hard to say which way gravity is pulling relative the mechanism, so it cant really be accounted for. This design rotates the entire assembly to average out the forces of gravity
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tourbillon

The article is not as in depth as the other one I read when I first heard about those though
Quality mechanical watches aren't really about keeping time, they are about decoration, design, and to some status.
If you can afford it (not live in a smaller apartment afford it, no big deal afford it) why no indulge if they interest you?
I hate to think how terrible life would be if you never did anything but what was absolutely necessary to maintain life.

Go crazy
But seriously, watches tell time. You only look like a tool wearing a thousand dollar watch.

oh, and as I told you, Fossil make some cheap, good quality steel watches
Sadly the ones I like aren't available in the UK.Jenspm wrote:

Order them through the US website and have it sent to a US friend then to you.ghettoperson wrote:

Ive got quite a nice luminox thats a few hundred
If tag is what youre looking for they have cheaper tags for like a third of the price

I know, I feel exactly the same about it. Just I like the designs a lot moreJenspm wrote:
tbh, I never buy replicas because... they're replicas.
I'd rather have a watch from an unknown cheap brand for the same price. Replicas are just lame imo.
No,You're all fucking dumb,1.8kGBP is a lot for a fucking watch. You'd just pay for a brand. My point is that YOU CAN FIND A GOOD LOOKING,QUALITY,RELIABLE WATCH FOR MORE THAN 10X CHEAPER PRICE!!!!!!
It is a stupid argument to compare 1.8k watch to more expensive models. It's like comparing a BMW with a Bugatti. It is cheaper compared to it,but again I could buy myself a nice Toyota or Mazda.
Why would you need a 1.8k watch besides for showing off and telling people how much you payed for it.

It'd be low down on my list of things to buy when I get a decent paying job, but yes, if I were in a well paying job and had the spare cash lying around, I would.blah wrote:
