I've always said the Russians are as bad as all the other usual suspects on the world stage. There are no angels in this conflict, while Kmarion's OP builds a strong case indicting Russia's machinations it does not absolve Georgia of any blame in holding on, often violently, to a region that seems to have little or no desire to be ruled from Tblisi.

All the footage on the news today, on all channels, showed nothing but celebrations in the streets of Ossetia and Abkhazia. The only protests were in Georgian territories outside of these zones. There is no ostensible difference between this situation and the Kosovo situation when the West were falling over themselves to recognise Kosovan statehood...actually their is one difference - unlike Kosovo, Ossetia and Abhkazia were not plantations.
Well the whole situation was caused by Russia. Kosovo, who do you think forced all those countries to form?
Are you saying the Russians forced all those Albanian Muslims to up sticks and settle in Kosovo?

No, they were all  forced to live together under a Communist government that played ethnic groups against each other.

So do you not think these ethnic groups now deserve the right to divide up into separate regions along ethnic lines, the way many, many countries have been formed for centuries? Why force these regions to remain part of Georgia?

Does any country want to give up territory? Even if that area is a different religion. Look at Northern Ireland.

It's classic Cold War scaremongering. I mean shit, who was the bright man who thought that the USSR would invade West Germany/Western Europe (breach the Iron Curtain etc..) back then anyway? How much shit did they cause through these lies.

Did they ever say they were going to do that? Or threaten to invade on numerous occasions?

And I've asked this before, I wonder if the people in the USSR had the same feelings about the West/USA. I wonder if their leaders used scare tactics on their population warning of a US invasion or something.

Seriously, some people....

You know there's a word for people who try to control others through fear.
"Bush Administration" is two words.

Can anyone justify not allowing it to happen now that the dye has been cast though? Why should the Ossetians and Abkhazians be forced to continue under a regime they clearly do not want?

The votes that they took for independence were not recognized by the international community because none of the other ethnic groups that lived their were represented, i.e. it was a fudged vote.

That, and why couldn't Russia work everything out diplomatically?  You bash the tactics used by the United States and the UN on the subjects of Iraq and Kosovo, but its OK for Russia to do it?

The Kosovon Muslim population decided they wanted independence for their little gerrymandered region while the Serbian's desire to remain part of Serbia got ignored...I don't see a difference.

So, what about the Russian invasion of Chechnya? Georgia can't keep a break away province but Russia can? Isn't that kinda a double standard? You keep throwing the Kosovo thing in our face saying its a double standard, oh and what about Russia threatening Moldavia and Ukraine or Poland?

I believe Chechnya should be allowed independence, in fact I believe any people who are linguistically and/or culturally distinct and indigenous to a region should not be forced to live under any regime they do not wish to be part of. I'm not a fan of Russia and I'm not defending them on every issue.

Regarding the comments made about Poland and Ukraine...what did they expect? They are allowing a missile system that potentially compromises Russian security to be placed in their territory, if I were Russian I would be worried too, how do they know what the system will actually be capable of once it's finished?

But, those countries are asking for the system, they want their security. They were ruled by that country for 40+ years.

They were on their way to independence, how long did it take Kosovo to become independent?

Why don't you read the entire dispatch? You might learn something.. like named sources. Or better yet, learn the history of Russia in that region. It might not sound so "conspiracy like".

If you don't believe the Russians hired Chechen thugs do do their savagery I can give you pictures via PM. I found them, and they are not posted here.

Regarding the link I sent you USM.

Images of dead and disfigured Georgian soldiers show them wearing US-surplus canteens, boots and helmets, or equipped with antique US anti-tank weapons. After the Georgians did all their tiny country could to support us in Iraq, all we gave them was cast-off junk - thanks to Congress and the State Department.

Our military was only allowed to train the Georgians for peacekeeping, anti-terrorism and small-unit tactics. The Georgians gave us all they had, and we gave them crap. The Bush administration should hang its wobbly head in shame.
That's why I asked.
