As the title says, what damage could that cause? I'm sure nothing severe, but would it shorten the length the CMOS battery will last or anything like that?
It won't do any harm. Why would you even want to do it? It only consumes about 1W in standby.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
My power strip/surge protector sits on my desk and has face switches for everything. Shutting off everything at night, and when going out of town, gets rid of little standby lights and what not without having to crawl underneath the desk and flip their own switches.
