For pure knock down power in an auto-loader pistol, that is practical for battle(no thompson contender 30.06's or the Magnum Research DE .50) would be a 10mm. Has more FPS than that of a 45 ACP and it is lighter and has less recoil than a .44 mag. I shot a bear with a my Glock 10mm (use as a back up while archery...in Idaho Bear/Mtn Lion any weapon seasons overlap with Elk/Deer archery), the bear came into the waterhole I was sitting in my tree stand at. The 10mm had full penetration on the thick hide, crushed his leg bone and still hit his vitals at 30-35 meters....you would never get that out of a 9mm with the same hollow point rounds I was using. The weight and size difference of the 10, 45, and 9 is not significant enough to prevent from practical battle use. I would say the perfect pistol unlock would be a 10mm auto loader.
