I have a feeling that AMD are falling in the same trap as Intel did back with the Pentium 4, just going for pure clock speed. Hopefully, their L3 will be fast too, with lower latencies than the Nehalems, that ould make AMD the target for gaming systems.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

It's running at 1.15V. Most quads clocked to 4+ uses 1.5V+. A signifigant difference.

AMD aren't in a position to launch something in that price segment.

Unlike the P4 the the phenom fx has the cache to back up the clock speed.

Prescotts had 2MB, which was huge fo the time. What killed the P4 was the 31-step pipeline. HT helped utilizing it a bit, but not enough.

I doubt something with that high of a stock frequency will overclock much. They're probably pretty much pushed to the limit at stock...

Exactly. The increase in clock speeds was being negated by the reduced IPC in the deeper pipeline, not to mention the harsh penalty that resulted if a branch prediction was wrong. Having to flush and repopulate a pipeline that deep was costly to performance.

Remember what happens when you add stages to a pipeline needlessly for clockspeed? Exactly more Speed and Heat for Less performance per clock.(P3 1.4ghz > P4 1.4 ghz)

Matter of fact, a Prescott at 1.4 > A P3 at 1.4, due to the new instructions supported, and some other optimizations and bla-di-bla-di-bla. A P3 at 1.4 totally shreds a Willamette at 2GHz, and is about equal to a Northie at 1.4.
