Right, my G/f's pc is crap, and I mean really crap. It's slow as hell, the onboard sound died, basically it's at the end of its life!

So, I'm going to treat her to a new pc

I'll be able to re-use the optical drives from the current pc, plus the k/b mouse and monitor.

The only stipulations are that I want it to have onboard sound and graphics, although the graphics don't need to be TOO hot as it'll only be used for the most simple of games if any. Also, overclockers or ebuyer only if you've any suggestions!

Here's what I've got so far:

Mobo: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/140212

CPU: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145258

Case: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/88473

Ram: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/119481 X2

I have a legit copy of both XP and Vista64 so the OS is covered. The above comes to £144.51 plus shipping.

Does the above look ok? Anything weak/too strong for a general use home pc?

Any advice will be gladly taken on board!!

An E1300 will do just as good for a PC that's not used for anything but web browsing, word processing, and the occasional movie. As long as she isn't gonna fold or render stuff, 2GHz with 512kB L2 will do. Then, I strongly recommend you getting a quality PSU, and a case that's delivered without one. This is the cheapest quality PSU on eBuyer.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Actually i have to say that from my experience of them you can trust ebuyers cheap o PSU's, i'm running on http://www.ebuyer.com/product/102993 and have been for the past year on what was then a high spec machine (88GTS, decent processor etc...just ran out of cash at the PSU and the case). I've had no problems what so ever with it.

Or at least you can trust that one, hell its got 50 reviews that average out at 4/5, so i'm not the only one who's thought it great for the price. £20.

Thanks for the replies guys. Great spot on the CPU freezer, didn't see that myself

Just trying to get my head around the figures.....

mobo+ram+psu+cpu=£120, give or take!

Case? Not overly worried on looks etc, but front USB is a must for digicamera etc.

This? : http://www.ebuyer.com/product/127656

Would leave £60 left over, ignoring delivery? Would love to get her a 17" tft but they start at this:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/126874

Which although a little over budget, I can handle. It will certainly look better than the 15" monitor she has currently. Is it ok?

Karma to you both

17" widescreen is hardly any bigger than a 15".

Splurg and get a 17" square or 19" widescreen.

Make sure she doesn't break up with you right after you give her this.

You're suggesting getting a 17" 4:3 (or 5:4 for that matter) over 17" 16:9? I wouldn't..

Cynic :p

Monitors, any good solid suggestions? Thinking on it, her old pc's monitor might not even be a 15", it might be smaller
