Daily - but especially in these election years - amateur political analysts like you and I hotly debate policies, candidates, wars and economics, often with excessive vitriol and hatred toward our chosen political target. Though in our fierce discussions, we, more often than not, generalize to the point where the discussion becomes "you are right, and I like you... or you are wrong and I hate you."
I would like to make a personal statement, and I'd like people to express their views on how heavily politics weigh into personal like or dislike.
Somebody's political opinion, unless used in a manner disrespectful to other human beings, has little to know weight on how I think about someone.
For instance, if a friend of mine says "I like what Bush has done and I would love to see McCain be president. We can't leave Iraq," or my roommate says "abortion has to be illegal, or girls will think they can just fuck anyone," I don't think less of them. Politically, I disagree, but that's their opinion, and "right" and "wrong" don't apply.
However, if a woman gets on an elevator and asks the hotel maid "What's wrong with the stairs?" and the hispanic maid responds "Don't know." and the woman says "You can't even speak fuckin' english and you come to america? Fucking ridiculous..."
That's when I have a problem with politics and people.
