I've had my PSP for about 3 or 4 months now, and I figure it's time to give CFW a go (especially since various packages of the 3000 series will be coming out over the next 3 months, so if I really screw things up, I could always buy a new one). Has anyone here done it to theirs? I just want to get some points of view and learn about people's experiences with it. So here are a bunch of random questions...

Is it easy to do yourself? (I hear there is some hard modding?)
How well do the homebrew apps work?
How big a memory stick should I have? Is 1 GB enough? (I plan on upgrading to at least 4 GB eventually anyway)
I know there are apps out there that let you run PSP images from the memstick; do I have to download those images or can I make them myself with the games I already have?
I know SNES/NES/GBA games work fine on it, but what about PS1 games? I've heard some run great while others have issues... and again, would I have to download these images or is there a way to make them myself from the games I've already got?

I saw an ad on Craigslist where some guy was offering to mod any PSPs and install CFW on it, and it was for $30 or something. I think that might be worth it if doing it myself proves to be too difficult. But then again, I'd rather do things my way and be in complete control.

I have the latest firmware version (4.05), so I assume it'll be difficult at this point to hack it. Apparently there are ways to revert firmware, but I figure it'd be better to just wait a while until teh leet haxors figure out a way to crack this version, right?

Oh, one more thing: yes I know what Google is, so please don't direct me to it. I've done some searching on my own, and now I want opinions from people who aren't complete total strangers and also aren't incoherent 12yo's.

Having custom firmware is great.

You have too late a firmware to downgrade using normal exploits. You need a Pandora Battery and Magic Memory stick. Both are easy to make provided you have access to a PSP with CFW. You just download a few bits of software, there are numerous guides on how to do this.

You make the memory stick, by putting some files on it. You use some files off that to make the Pandora battery. You use both of them in the PSP you wish to customise. Easy.

I'd say you want a 2-4GB memory stick. Games can be fairly large, some are less than 200MB, but some (like God of War and FFVII:CC) are a bit over 1GB. PS1 games typically work perfectly. Some have a few issues with crashing/graphical glitches. You can obviously make images yourself - that's how they get up there to download in the first place - but it's a bit awkward, so it's easier to download.
