Hey,

Have purchased a new rig from cyberpowersystem.co.uk and just wanted opinions/criticism/suggestions for the sexperts...

Its still being built so I can change things if anyone thinks I'm making any mistakes with it but £700 is max budget....

Case: APEVIA X-Cruiser Mid-Tower Metal Case w/ Side Window (GREEN) (With GREEN neon and max fans... Pimp! lulz)
CPU: Intel C2D E8500 CPU
HDD: 500GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM
MOBO: Asus P5N-E nForce 650i SLI Chipset LGA775 FSB1333 DDR2
RAM: 4GB (2x2GB) PC6400 DDR2/800 Dual Channel Memory
PSU: LC Silent Giant 550W Power Supply w/ 140mm FAN
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB 16X PCI-E
CD: SONY DUAL FORMAT 20X DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW DRIVE DUAL LAYER (GREEN)

on board 7.1 HD sound, network card etc. etc.

/w Vista home premium and McAfee internet security and anti-virus

TOTAL: £706

I know its excessively green....

Get an X38 (or p35 if it's too expensive) mobo and ATi 4870/4850....
Also, get a PSU from a known company I guess (never heard of LC)...
And get an Antec P182 (case)...

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. Cheers for the comments. Running avast at the mo- but thought i should get a "proper" anti vir- just assumed that ones u had to pay for were gonna be beter... maybe not. Prob not gonna change the case- want a mean green machine... :s

Will look at GTX+ looks to be only extra 20 quid- is it that much of a difference from standard GTX?

Really don't want ati again - had problems with this machine and i HATE catalyst control centre.... even if that is a stupid reason.

And the plan is to upgrade in the future - hence the quad core and SLi compatible mobo.

Well, it doesn't slow the cards, but the bandwidth of the bus to each card is cut in half. At higher resolutions, with the newer cards, that could lead to reduced performance.

Quite honestly, I don't like the NV Intel chipsets. They are known to be problematic, and anyone using an Intel processor I recommend to get an Intel chipset. The only way I would ever recommend an NV chipset is if the person is going with SLI right out of the gate.

How about a P45, there not that much more expensive. I went with an Asus P45 P5Q as a temporary board and it works a treat. Only one PCI slot, though you can get the pro that allows you to run two cards in crossfire (yes I know), but that has a similar problem in that it goes back to x8 x8 per slot.

Flip side though is that on a P45 there PCI-e 2.0, so the doubled bandwith means if you did ever go crossfire, with the exception of say 4870x2s in quadfire, there shouldnt be that much of an impact on frame rates.

Perhaps someone else has had other experience, but with those P5N-D's I have heard nothing but problems, infact the only real Nvidia board I can think of that stays with intels when it comes to praise is Evga's 750i FTW, which is almost as much as a 780 last time I checked.

I think you should prioritise what you want first.

Update: Thanks for the info and help guys- have followed some of the advice- couldnt afford a better mobo so going with an MSI P35 board and upgrading to a gtx. Also binned mcafee- avast and superantispyware seem to do the job pretty well. Thanks again and i'll let u know how it runs- should be here next week xD

I agree that a large portion of AV duties can be done by not being stupid. I do not agree that you're never going to get a virus using that method alone. There are plenty of methods of attaining malware that can not be countered by NOT clicking here for free porn.
